hi all. i have a steady dripping of water from the pump behind the impellor housing. its coming from the holes in the casting IMMEDIATELY behind the impellor and running straight on to the alternater belt. is it a straight forward job to rectify or a VP agent only. ill try and do it my self if its not a" special tools n knowledge only" job. thoughts, advice, recomendations all gratefully recieved. thanks in advance...... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

you can obtain pattern seals easily - I bought mine at less than £2 each from a bearing factor( TRY YELLOW PAGES) you need to show /take your old one as a pattern.

This was dealt with a few days ago.
You can replace that seal immediately behind the impellor without having to remove pump or dismantle raw strainers etc.At least this is how it it was done on my 40A and assume your 42 is not that different.
Take off front plate, remove impellor and you can see(probably with torch) seal at rear of chamber.Tap seal out towards engine block (screwdriver ?) and with bent bit of wire(about 1/4 inch bent at end) via that hole where water is dripping out tilt seal until you can hook seal forwards out and off shaft with that same bit of wire.Make mental note which way seal came out.
Grease seal on shaft and tiny bit of Hydolamar on outer metal surface then push back in with fingers(its held that lightly in place)until flush with back of chamber wall .
£ 4 quid and 30 mins at worst.

I was the person from a few days ago! I found that the water seal was so knackered and there was so little access that I had to take the whole pump off to remove all the bits. The seal did not come out easily - but the pump is fairly old and the seals had never been replaced. Once the pump was out, it was a fairly easy (but long) DIY job. I ordered new bearings as well as the next seal back (oil seal) was also damaged and there was a little grinding in the shaft bearings. Taking the pump off completely was relatively easy, as my boat is stored on a lift out system, so no problems with water coming in. I used Volspec Marine Supplies and they got replacement parts to me in a couple of days.

Hi
I was going to refer back to your post from the other day but you beat me to it.
Glad to hear you sorted out your pump and have to agree it would be easier to fix the pump with it removed from the engine.

Just in case any one is interested,
Both water seal and oil seal are the same on KAD32 - GACO Angus DPSM16287
Bearings (2 off) are SKF 6203 open (no rubber seal)
Bought a Volvo overhaul kit(877371) because pump was dripping out of hole behind impeller but all I needed was the two seals... doh!

Not wanting to drift the thread ........... but,
I took the cover plate off the water pump tonight (KAD32) and 2 of heads on the brass screws snapped off. When I removed the cover plate I was able to get a pair of pliers on the few millimetres that was protruding from the pump and quite easily take the stump of the screw out.
Is it "normal" for this to happen?

Yes its called electrolysis.

Beware!!! pattern seals have mild steel springs, so buy genuine volvo ones or you will be doing the job again in a few months.

Very true, but you can specify salt water as the application, and you can buy them with SS springs. From memory, the seal should be made of neoprene rubber also - the supplier will be able to advise based on the application. The last pair I bought were approx 15 pounds each.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi VolvoPaul,
The manuf. and part numbers I gave are from the VP Overhaul kit. That's the ones they use.
Completely agree with you if you were to just find equivs on fleabay.

Hi PipDoc.
Mine have never given way. I haven't had any signs of corrosion on the screws either, but I do put waterproof grease on them every year when I do them up, but as they are brass, I don't do them up with a whole load of torque either. There's also a new set of screws in said VP overhaul kit aswell.

I had the exact same problem on a reasonably new KAD32. It had about 80 hours on it and was around two years old. The old spring had rusted away to nothing so I assumed it was mild steel. I replaced with stainless spring version obtained from simplybearings.co.uk for around £5 each at the time.

If you can get hold of the Jun 08 MBM, I detailed the process as a step by step on page 92.
