Get the D4 as the KAD has had a few known problems that still exist altho Volvo dont recognise them. The D4 is specidically designed marine engine not converted Truck engine.

Volvos get stick from all quarters.......if you believed everything that everyone said about Volvos..they would have gone bust years ago. Funny though how they command a massive percentage of the market!!!.
IMHO i would go for the new D4.......just because it is the latest.......people like to have the latest !!!. If resale value is of concern........then a more important consideration is the boat that the engine will drive.......
Noticed that your current boat is a Mariah 218. Brought back memories of the 216 that I owned for 5 years........a great little boat that gave tremendous fun and resold after 5 years for the same price that I paid for it!!!

I have a F33 with KAD 32's and have never had a single problem, the boat is new and I would expect issues in the 1st year if there where going to be any, and they have done over 100 hours in the season.

The D4 is a new engine, and in my short time in boating we the punter seem to be the road testers for any new product, and unlike cars (mass production I grant you) the recalls and identified issues seem to take a while to sort. IMHO let some else be Volo's field tester and at the moment stick to a proven product.

Is the D4 a completely new engine or just a KAD32 with loads of mods around it, like a new heat exchanger and oil cooler, nice plastic covers with Volvo D4 written on it but the same engine block underneath? Or is it a new revolutionary Volvo design that is the answer to all out prayers...... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

At the SBS, the Volvo chap on the stand, was adament that the D4 was a from the drawing board engine, and design exclusively for Marine use. There is also a price premium for the D4, Vs the KAD 32

Coincidence that they called their lorry engine the D4 as well then... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I must admit, I heard that the D4's was supposed to be amazing. We were looking at re-engining out boat at one point and the D4's came in at a whopping £15k a piece, however they would do a deal for two at £13k a piece fitted, uh hum, I don't think so........

At the end of the day, diesels are pretty good and like Steve E says, better to stick with the devil you know.

Do your home work on the known problems with the KAD32's and check out what you are buying is not suffering with those issues.

Either that or buy something with D4's and a load of warranty to support it for potential road test issues that may arise.

I difference between KAD32 and D4 is hp o/p
KAD32 is 170hp, D4 is 210hp , so boat should be faster on D4's which would probably help resale value.
D4 also uses latest common rail diesel technology, which should be of benefit in terms of emisions and economy. This may or may not be of benefit in the future, depending on whether the ec starts legislating on boat emmisions as the've done with cars and trucks, but since it's also 3.7l as opposed to 2.4l suspect any benefit probably offset by larger capacity

The D3 (160hp) is the nearest to the KAD32 (170hp) in terms of hp. If the choice is KAD32 or D4 (210hp) then go for the D4. The legs fitted to the D4 are also new generation whereas they're the old ones on KAD32. Also note that KAD32 has whiny compressor where D4 doesn't.

See MBY Sept 2003 for a full article.

Not aware of any problems with KAD32, although have heard of problems with KAD43/44.

According to latest MB&Y only KAD300's likely to stay in production, although nothing on volvo site about it, all engines seem to be still available

Pedantic but...

The 30- and 40-series diesels did not start life as truck engines...they were designed from the outset as marine engines (four- and six-pot based on the same in-line block) and have since been adapted for some other uses, as well as developed well beyond original horsepowers.

Dedicated marine diesels are pretty rare in the marine world although some models in the Yanmar range have evolved specifically for marine applications.
