kad 32 getting hot ....STILL !!!!!

Hi All..... a bit of a delayed update due to a certain "Bertha" ...took TM up Soton water this morning with a temp gauge on loan from a certain ogaryo (ta much geezer)...these are the readings I obtained (bearing in mind I wasn't to sure at which target was best)...turbo, before water injection elbow 87degs....after water injection 36/7 degs.... heat exchanger, side 38, end plate 40.... thermostat housing top half 87 .. bottom half 84/5.... calorifyor take off elbows (both checked)(comes out of the thermostat housing) 80... hot tank end 68 (seems a big drop in 24") top of engine between rocker covers 77... PROBLEM .. I have no idea how to interpret these !!!!......ps. temp gauge on dash still getting up to 96/7 before I chicken out........ so over to you guys for a direction to follow pretty PLEEEASE !!!!!

Steve, good to see you're putting the IR temp thingy to good use, bear in mind it's not been calibrated so the temperature readings may be out. However, what you should be able to do is grab a mate (Keith?) with a similar setup to your boat and take the readings at the same points to compare with the readings you're getting. That should in theory enable you to home in on the comparative hot spot(s) on your boat compared to theirs presuming theirs is running at standard temperature

cheers Gary

The readings in my view are spot on .
Diagnosis 1-temp sender faulty
2- if the above is changed and still gauge reads high - then inc resistance in the loom -poss corroded spades @ the back of the gauge -water /condensation ingress - .find to dodgy connection(s) + replace .
temp gauge is a "resistance ometer".
just one more thing -assume its a single engine -no twin to compare?

Assuming you can get access, I'd take a reading as close as possible to where the temperature sensor is fitted - it shouldn't be more than a couple of degrees different from the gauge if the readings are right. I suspect as already suggested it's electrical resistance rather than 'real', but you're wise not to risk pushing it!

Assuming Gary's IR thermometer is reasonably accurate the highest temp recorded is 87 C and this will be close to the point where the gauge sensor probe is mounted.

Problem here is not liking the reading so blaming the instrument, but with 87C external your internal will likely be a few degrees higher, therefore the probe could be reporting accurately. Until you can prove it wrong I would believe it.

Try one of these and buy a screw in pocket the same thread as the sensor. Load the pocket with grease and insert the thermocouple.

To calibrate dunk the thermocouple in a kettle or saucepan of rapidly boiling water - this will be 100oC. To calibrate Gary's IR meter record the boiling water also but you need something the IR beam can see and reflect from so a simple piece of cork a wooden spoon or plastic in the boiling water (don't shoot the bottom of a boiling pan as the base surface will be hotter).

I fear you have yet to find your problem.

Lots of suggestions on here - I would list then out and work on a process of elimination - you will find it.

Have you thought about rainwater cooling ! (I'll get my coat)

Before using my I r gun I aim it at my hand 31.5 c which is about right .

Steve I'd say there is nothing wrong with your engine It's either the sender or the gauge or maybe faulty dirty wiring connection, have you pulled off the wire from the sender, do this a few times it will clean the connector.

HI FOLKS.....Welcome to what seems like episode 997 of this saga !!!......arrived at Tesco hamble yesterday to top up boats nose bag.....in store bumped, into ogaryo and family doing same...alas at no time did he/they offer to pay for my nosh !!.... big mistake !!....HUGE !!.... so got my revenge by making it pour down while the ogaryo clan leaving store and loading car !!...titter titter.....ANYWAY...went for a bit of a ride over to cowes just for sniffing about purposes, and on return as I entered the river I started pressing buttons and just checking stuff out when I pressed the panel lights switch !!!!.......OH MY GOOWD GAWD !!!!!!!!.......the volt gauge jumped up from 12.9 to 13.7,ish.... the oil pressure rose 5psi, anddddddddddd..... the temp gauge dropped about 7/8 degs ...which makes a bottom line of ALL gauges reading as brand new !!!!.....im not saying that this is the EUREKA moment BUT it did feel good .....SOOOOOOO..... this morning in millpond conditions, with so with some Led Zep n ac/dc on that could of vibrated the boat to bits had a wang down to Lymington n back via cowes with all dials showing the info that makes stresses drift away.....SOOOOOO what to do next, switch, panel lights, cabling OR LEAVE ALONE......over to you guys ..as im all ears .....

Fab news buddy :)

I think the first thing I'd do if I was you would be to switch on the power for Fairways, give her a good scrub down and then lift the covers.

After you've done that........

I think I'd now spend time cleaning up all contacts behind the dash (while your waiting next for the rain to stop) and give everything a good spray in protective stuff.

See you shortly :)

I think you could have a dodgy earth/negative in the dash wiring , this could be giving a higher reading on the gauges because of increased resistance , turning on the dash lights could have improved things by giving another pathway for the the volts to go if you see what I mean , a bit like when you see someone towing a trailer with the trailer lights doing weird stuff because there is a dodgy connection .

Mmmmmm one symptom doesn't fit. Temp shoots up when boat is put under load. If an earth issue, I'd expect the issue to be apparent when not under load too.

Yep , good point . I wonder if the temp guage works in a different way to the rest and exaggerates the high reading under normal operating conditions .
I`m going to have a browse on boatdiesel to see if anyone over there has had a similar problem .

Hi G....temp still goes up under load BUT not anywhere near as high or as quick.... had a brill run down to Lymington this morning and returned via cowes and temp only touched 95/6 at 28knts with fully grassed and barnacled bum !!!!... so fingers crossed ..
