kad 32 frost damage.....thoughts please...

The ols style cooler (maybe yours) has one 13mm nut at the very bottom rear of the cooler beneath the breather filter, in later years this was replaced by a bracket from the 2 rear side studs, so maybe for sure its that one thats holding it still.

I think that as VP says the plastic lid was a modification and the lid and hoses came as a kit which if still available being Volvo could be cost efective
You could try fitting the lid and testing it without removing the nest plug the hose tails and I think that a Volvo drain tap with tail will fit in place of the drain
Make sure you fit the latest drain there have a few variations

You can remove the pipe from the turbo, just 1 clamp 10mm socket and its off which will help after taking off the breather filter, you can then reach the 13mm nut at the bottom, presume you have metal cover or plastic, if plastic it may be the 13mm nut on the 90 degree angle bracket thats holing it on, which is above the starter motor, you will need to undo the 2 17mm bolts from the bracket too to draw off the whole assemble as one.

AT LAST !!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, i finally got the casing off, and have CAREFULLY pulled out the core insert. i,ve got it standing vertical and have filled it with water to see if it has any OBVIOUS leaks...have ordered a new lid from keyparts at £64 inc vat (could of been worse) but it won,t be there till friday. hohum. .....just praying core is ok as a new 1 is..........................£1,316.40 inc !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.................ambulance and defib m/c on standby.......advice on breaking the news to swmbo URGENTLY REQUIRED !!!!!.....at least the sun is trying to cheer me up.....

Well done
have you ordered the seals for nest as well

hi scottie.. sorted. im at a bit of a halt because i cant really workout how to presure test the core. i supose ill have to wait for the new lid n reassemble even then im not sure how to go about it....do i do it dry or with water in etc etc..the prob with removal was the 12mm bolt in the space tween the block n casing over the top of the starter !!!!. im MUCH to old to bend into gaps like that..if nothing else this might be of help to others..... ps. i must say that i,ve actually suprised myself, that i,ve got this far, ALL thanks to YOU,VOLVOPAUL and ALL the other posters.....MANY THANKS TO ALL !!!!

Well done Steve, do let us know how it turns out. You have got me a bit worried now over my KAD32s. Was the boat out of the water when the freezing took place? Ours has been in the water but is coming out this week.

The test is an air test. Rebuild and bung up one of the raw water inlets, then apply air through the other. I can't remember but I think it needs to hold 27psi for 3 minutes - the workshop manual has the details.

hi RIN...yep Thanks Mum lives on the trailer in the back garden..if you go back a few posts you,ll see that i did drain down but not enough ! add to that a 10min power cut that bu*gered the fanheater timer n thats what i didnt notice for a couple of days !! add to that we had a couple of -12 nights!! i will be giving myself a mega bollo*king later IF IF IF swmbo doesnt make me sell it first !!!(see website below)....will post further progress as n wen there is some..thanks to ALL FOR YOUR INTEREST its good for moral.

this might make you smile !!!!

spoke to RK marine this afternoon about the core and looking for leeks etc, and one of their tricks is to fill the core with HOT water, leave alone and just watch..the theory being that all the joints expand with the heat, good idea thought i. so duelly filled it from the kettle right up to cover the tubes, gave it chance to get hot, the picked it n held it at face level into the sun to see what was what..no leak so far, lowered it down, water level had dropped 1/4inch PANICCCCCC !!!!!...........yes you,ve guessed it, i had not done the drain plug up tight and it was all dripping over me !!!!!!!........SO IM STUPID TWIT OF THE WEEK and its only monday !!!!!!

not good at computors,as you can tell, so will explain... pic 1. the busted bit 2. the core balanced on the bench full of hot water. 3. the black marks are just oil smears, 4. the bolt n bracket the you have to dislocate all your joints to get at (from the back)!!!....ogaryo has been kind enough to lend me his presure machine and ill let you know how i get on when the new lid arrives...

Fingers crossed for you Steve.

and another thing....

Just something to look at, while you've got it in bits.

I don't know if its the same on the KAD32, but I had an AD41B with a very similar looking after cooler.

There is a tiny hole in the base of the aluminium outer housing, it is on the center-line and about 2mm diameter. Apparently it is very important to make sure it remains clear and so can act as a drain for condensation.

update

evening all...well, this is the news todate..KEYPARTS rang on thursday to say parts were ready 1 day EARLY !!! Thank you KEYPARTS....(good start). since monday, i had been filling the core with a kettle of hot water and leaving x2 when getting in from work and leaving the last fill over night..NO APARENT leaks (on a roll?)..OGARYO of this parish came down from milton keynes with the presure pump as promised last night MANY THANKS TO HIM (or is it BIG RESPECT GUY!!)...so today was THE DAY...it took ages to work out how to seal the hose connections (will explain in detail if your interested) not being able to beg borrow or steal the right hose size for the job...................AAANNYWAYYYYYY.....as i sit here the core has had 9psi without a blip since2.30pm !!!! am going to leave over night just to see.....i wanted to go higher but there was no way i could make the plugs stay in.........any thoughts about the presure GOOD OR BAD im listening. ..A LARGE THANK YOU TO ALL for you interest and replys.

sounds promising Steve.. if you do need to go higher than 9psi........ I cant recall if the hole you're using to pressurise the unit has a raised flange to take a hose connection.. if it does, my suggestion would be to fit a rubber hose using a circlip to secure and then put the bung in the hose using another circlip to secure that too i.s. convert it to a flexible connection so it can be clamped to stop the bung popping out

Sounds like you are going for the belt and braces approach!! I would have said that you have clearly established that there isn't a leak. Might be that the plastic lid cracking was enough to relieve the pressure????
