KAD 32 cuts out

On our last two trips one of our KAD32's has cut out (as in revs slowly decay) after 2 hours or so of normal running at around 3200RPM

My original diagnosis was diesel bug in fuel. So filters changed twice, and “shock” fuel treatment added. (Although no apparent sign of bug or any gunge in filters)

Same thing happened yesterday. Except prompt throttling back to tick over speed before engine had completely died, it still ticked over as normal, rather than cut out completely. And after 10 mins or so at tick over, on opening throttle again it ran normally under load all the way up to flat out.

No slipping belts, or odd noises.

Realise this is all a bit vague. But begining to wonder if the cause could be something else.

Any ideas as to another possible "fault". ?

sounds like a fuel supply problem as it recovers and will idle etc. you may have a foreign body in the fuel pipe (rubbish in the tank, swarf etc), or possible air getting in. I would check through all the piping and if possible rod it through with a length of wire.

We had similar with our single KAD32 on our way back across the Wash earlier this year. Ran fine for half an hour or so at 3400 rpm then all of the sudden the revs dropped and dropped and the boat fell off the plane. Knocking the throttle back it ticked over fine and we managed to limp back to the anchorage at 5 knots to wait for the next tide into Boston.

Once there we did the usual fuel filter checks etc. fully expecting that we had picked up some suspect fuel whilst on the Fens. But to our surprise the filters were clean. Changed them anyway and the boat was back to normal again. Revved up and jumped onto the plane.

We have since found oil in our air box however so suspect an oil seal on the turbo is none so clever. The boat is due for lifting shortly for the winter so whilst it is out we will have the turbo reconditioned.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will investigate further. I was begining to wonder if I had jumped to the wrong conclusion as to the dreaded Diesel bug. In essence Its got to be lack of fuel or lack of air. But would imagine lack of air would produce black sooty smoke.

Began to wonder if it was the compressor "tripping" out. But at 3200RPM I imagine it should only be the Turbo which is active, and runs purly on its own inertia so to speak ie its driven by the exhaust gasses.

Sods law says its always seems to happen just when you dont need it such as when approaching somewhere like to the West Pole marker off Chichester harbour or similar requiring a bit of "concentration".
