hi all...have been sniffin about over the lump in general, and i,ve noticed the hose from the turbo, down to the exhaust, has been chaffing against the back end of the heat exchanger.. its NOT warn through by a longway, but i dont know if this hose is full of presure when running..is it a "do now" or can i just prevent futher rubbing untill my back is well enough to get in there ???...... if this link works, (im cr*p at computors), its part 33 off of part 30 http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7738870-25-3045.aspx .......cheers all......ps. if your on the briny this weekend please think of me.....i,ve got to visit some rellies !!!!....OHHH WOE IS ME

That pipe carries raw water away from the cooling system into the exhaust elbow and thence out through the exhaust pipe, if it parts company then the metal exhaust will get hot and possibly burn the rubber pipe going to the transom, you could start a fire, change it double quick.

Hose 33 water bypass to transom connection

If this hose goes then you may have water ingress as the lower end is below water when engine is not running if it splits when engine is running then you will have water filling engine compartment

If you change the hose in the water I would suggest it will flood you may be able to replace part of the hose with a joining piece

Pipe 38 the water level may be well up this it is subject to corrosion at the top a repair kit can be had from VP which helps the short bellows to seal

you could try wrapping it with self almalgamating tape, and pulling it clear of the obstruction for the time being, but get a spare "now" so that you are "ready" for it. Not sure if you have a warning siren on yours exhaust outlet, if not then the only way to check that water is exiting is to observe the exhaust at the transom, if you have a leg then that idea will not work. As stated if it does go then the water will fill the bilge and the bilge pump will let you know. Not a problem to replace what little water if any comes in can be stopped by stuffing a rag into the hole on the elbow, have your new pipe ready with new clip, fit to exhaust first then keep open end high no water will ingress.

hi again omega... have been studying the form and have removed the airfilter assembly and the hose from the turbo end. the hose is very long and goes right under the engine, so for now im going to just slice it with some copper pipe and double jubilee clip the insert..i,ve over done my back just doing that, so bilge diving is a no no for now..new pipe to be ordered tomorow..

Suspect this is a common problem. I had exactly the same. As a temporary fix until the boat was out of the water again, I cut the pipe at the point of the chafe and inserted a short length of stainless pipe, rejoined the two hose ends and double clipped with jubillee clips. Depending on how low your boat sits in the water you should be ok. Thinking was that this was preferable to a catastrophic hose split at sea rounding the horn, on a dark night etc etc. Having now replaced the complete hose I have protected or sleaved / lagged the new ones at the point of chafe so it does not happen again

On no account remove complete hose whilst the boat is in the water, if you think the lower end looks difficult to get at. In fact its near impossible unless you stand on your head, upside down, inside out whilst balancing on one leg.

Despite what some might think, removing a smallish bore pipe that is below the waterline will not sink the boat in 30 seconds. The water ingress will not be that great and the pressure is non-existent. Obviously, water will enter the boat, but not very fast and not under any noticeable pressure. Of course, if you take a hose off and can't get the new one on, you could be sitting there with your finger up the pipe for a while :D

I think we are missing the point.

The hose in question has its lower end in an inacessable position near the bottom of the transom shield, guaranteed to make removal even with the boat out of the water a job for a contortionist. Just how much of a contortionist obviously depends on the boat itself and the space around the engine.

Water flowing in as well, regardless of how much, is complication you could do without. !

The water elbow on the exhaust elbow will rotate when the securing plate is slackened off which may allow you to realign the hose but I would replace the rubber o ring if doing this.

If you are able to successfully remove and refit the hose in seconds or minutes. I agree with you.

If due to the difficulty in getting at the item in question it takes hours. I do not.

holes in boats

We regularly open the tops of our strainers to clear mud and rubbish, by poking a broom handle down through the engine water intakes, not a great deal of water ingresses whilst doing this. Nor does removing the paddle wheel sender of the VDO speedo do much harm either. Have replaced gate valves to toilets and engine intakes whilst in the water, no problem just stand on the "hole" with a bare foot makes a great seal. For four inch exhaust outlets use a rolled up towel.

hi all.... im lucky because boat lives on the trailer in the garden...so if i get water coming in when the hose is off, we must be in a tsunami !!!!..........tehee tehee tehee...........sorry, i,ll leave now................ps. THANKS FOR ALL THE INTEREST & ADVICE.....PPS. back still very bad, so hose splice stays for now....hohum.
