Juton Seaqueen @ 13 months

I only wish it was a magical potion! I've used Micron 66 on the the last two occasions which were in 2007 and 2010. It needs doing again now and it was already fairly useless by last summer.

Maybe I'm just a miserable git with over optimistic or unrealistic expectations, but with the amount of the Micron 66 I put on I expected it should have been doing just fine last summer and it wasn't.
But, it was way better than the pics shown after a similar amount of time, and that was with very little boat use.

Seaqueen is supposed to be multi season, dependent upon the number of coats. Hence, I was surprised that so many people were impressed by the pics above. I would have been mightily hacked off if mine was like that just over a year.

I was considering SeaQueen for this year and those pics have convinced me otherwise.

The east Coast has a lot of suspended silt ect, that enables growth on the hull to get a foot hold.
An Etap was hauled on monday with enough oysters on the keel to supply Belgium for a month, also loadsa very large Barnies on the rudder & the water line.
Seaqueen works where we are based compared with all other antifouls

Prior to Seaqueen I used Seajet Emperor, twice the price and utterly useless. Second season of Seaqueen now and MUCH happier. Any less than Sailorman has after 13 months and I would be really shocked!

Hi All,

Just an update on my antifoul........
2 seasons ago I fitted that new fangled ultra sonic antifouling.
I was very sceptical at the time, but took the leap of faith and installed it (I went for the two transponder option).

I have to say it works FANTASTIC!! I get NO weed or barnicles.
What I do get after many many weeks is a slight brown slime - but this easily falls off with a broom!!
My log impellor only needed to be cleaned once last season!!

I have heard stories that ultrasonics struggle to keep the weed down in warmer water.... but for me, based in Bradwell - it works very very well.

No, I didn't go for the Aussie homebuild kit...... lots of forum talk about that!!

I went for - http://www.ultrasonic-antifouling.com/ultra-system/?gclid=CODlrsKS1LYCFQeW3godqSAA8w

I got the dual voltage one, so when ever it detects mains voltage it automaticly switches over to it.
We do switch it off when staying on board at night - otherwise you can tune it to the clicking noise and it drives you mad!!
The clicking isn't loud.... you can just tune in to it in the dead of night!!

Regards

Ian

As Sailorman says works over here on the East Coast. But how much did your Micron cost? Seaqueen I find is at least half the price of comparable antifoul

£850 plus installation! Will it last twelve to fifteen years as that could buy me at least that in anti foul. Admittedly you have no labour each year.

I have just applied 2 coats+ of Sea Queen, based on the comments made on here.

Being a sad old b...... I researched comprehensively beforehand, paying particular attention to the data sheets rather than the advertising "puff". Frinstance the latest version of Micron recommends upto 4 coats!

Any antifouling costs as much as liquid gold, and is about as much use, but 4 coats would have been 10 litres at £90 or so per 2.5l.
10 litres of Sea Queen was approx. £190.
I calculated how much I needed to use based on the mean coverage rate shown in the data sheet to provide the recommended dry film thickness, and kept banging it on until I had used what I calculated I needed to use [8l].

Generally speaking (enclosed) marina based boats, if used reasonably regularly, foul much less than those of us on swinging moorings. Just look at the colour of the water inside places like BYH or SYH to see how much sediment settles out as the water flow practically ceases.

Of course the marinas then have the joy of dredging to provide a decent depth of water!

If I can get anywhere near the results of Sailorman then I shall be very pleased.

I have also let it be known to the family that if they want to sail at a reasonable pace this season that the combination of my retirement in 12 days time and my birthday in early May would be a suitable time to buy me one of those fancy Brizo hull scrubbers, recently well reviewed.

Thanks for the comments - as I've bought 5 litres, and some antifoul doesn't seem to last in the can, I might just keep plastering it on until I run out! If you see a small blue person, it's not a smurf!

Applied 1 coat of SeaQueen on top of the cracking / flaking residue and what's more I had enough left over from last year so cost nothing additional!

Might take a weekend in Heybridge Basin in a couple of months as the fresh waster I am told helps to kill any fouling that may have built up.

Agree you get better 'mutual protection' in a marina than in flowing water.

The stuff we use is good for 24 months plus. We always get lifted every other year, mainly to replace anodes.
Comes out slimey not coated.
Then again at 15 litres to do two coats, that's a good thing........

Quite a few of us at Gravesend now use Seaqueen and we get very heavy growth and barnacles to deal with. Most reckon it will last two years with a bit of a scrub at the waterline and just below, once the first year and maybe twice the second. Really good results for here and if antifouled each year its cracking.

Installed it myself in approx 5 hours (simple to do).
at Bradwell they charge (approx) £225 to lift you out and put you in a cradle, £60 ish to rent the cradle for the winter, and then £200 to throw you back in in the spring.
The ultrasonic system comes with a 3 year warranty............ so, it "should" have almost paid for its self in this time!
I will come out for one week on a "summer special" for approx £100.

I mean.... what can possibly go wrong!!!!

We realised this year what a mistake it was coming out of the water in winter. We love winter sailing - but finding a few warm winter weekends to sand and paint is a nightmare. Much better to haul out for a month in early autumn, the warmer weather dries the hull much quicker, work on the hull is easy and the cost as Ian has said is about 75% less.

Fox`s do a special summer rate for berth holders all year round.

We have got into the habit of coming out of the water for 2 or 3 days in the summer.... I take a couple of days off mid week, so we don't even miss a weekend's sailing (sailing.... ah that's a pleasant memory!).... much easier on the constitution, and a LOT cheaper!
