Re: My world trip (latest)

Here's the latest on my massive long-heralded trip, for which we sold all our worldly belongings and so on, just like in "Sell up and Sail". We plan to travel to the France, Gironde, Spain, Portugal and then onwards to the med or who knows where - and perhaps back again by October but perhaps not. How exciting!

Day 1. We need to stock up. So, I went to Tescos. I quite like Tescos because it has an excellent selection of cheese, and quite close by are other nibbles too. I was chatting with somone else about these in the aisle when to my surprise my trolley got bumped, which didn't cause too much damage but gave me a nasty jolt. There were long queues at the checkout, and then there was the saga of trying to get a taxi back to the boat, when the guy went the wrong way and ended up charging us a fortune. Tsk.

Day3 -120 Lots of testing in the solent and then went across to France. The french are weird aren't they? They close their shops at midday or one o'clock. I wonder why? Bunch of weirdos. Someone said "bonjour" to us and we felt that home was a long long way away.

Once we had to move the boat. Now, I like to think i am very good at boat handling, because when you've had a 27 foot boat for as long as I have, well, I won't bore you. Suffice to say that there was a bunch of tosspots on a Halberg Rassy, which in case you haven't fallen asleep with boredom is a boat bought by a ratbag with more money than sense. Well, more money than me. Anyway, one way or another the boat-moving went wrong which was the fault of something else. Some of the ratbags on the Halberg Rassy smirked so I became one of those people who try and shout explanations of our cockups to the assembled throng instead of getting on with it. You see, there was some weed under the boat, and other very boaty reasons for the problem too.

Day 121. Decided not to go too much further and came back to St Malo. Cos it is a bit dodgy and the next bit is 60 miles. Yes, 60 miles! Also it is called Ushant and Chenal du Four, and another bit is caled the Raz de Sein which all sounds dead scary. Oops, I mean, it is potentially quite dangerous. Not that I have been there, or indeed anywhere even close, because of thr aforementioned 60 miles. And coming across the channel was about that, so that would be the same *again*. No thanks.

Back near St malo we found a nice bit of inland water, phew. So, today we hired some bikes. Well, we tried to hire some bikes, and the person told us the right shop, but it was shut and the stupid cow didn't know it was shut. On Monday! Why shut on a Monday? Somone said it was probly cos they work over the weekends don't get much business on Mondays - only those people who had possibly crapped out of a cruise to the med AND had failed to buy a foldup bike in advance would want to be hiring bikes on a Monday. Git.

Nonetheless we are really enjoying this cruise which is just like Bill Cooper in "Sell up and Sail" apart from the tiny difference that they went round the world and we went round Jersey.

Anyway I have just got commercial endorsement on my YM ticket which means that I am available to do some skippering should anyone have a delivery trip from say Port Solent to the Hamble for which there is a window of a few months for us to plan and undertake the voyage, stop near portsmouth because of the very dangerous seas and return to Gosport.

Re: My world trip (latest)

"We actually sited land 15 miles off Cherbourg. Once this happens time begins to stand still and it became very hot so it was with great happiness that we finally entered Cherbourg harbour"
THanks magic for the corroboration .. several years ago I sighted similar .. and had the piss ripped out of me by the crew who claimed it was a hallucination brought on by lack of sleep for the previous 72 hours. Good to know its still there!
