Hi,

My first post to the forum but I've been reading lots on here and now have a few questions... It would be great to get some input on-please!

For some background, I am exploring the possibility of owning a boat and have had a long-held ambition to have something along the lines of a Fairline Targa 38 / 40. Usage will be pretty simple: day-tripping and overnighting with occasional long weekends spent on it. Majority of the time it will just be me and my wife using the boat but I also expect to occasionally have friends/couples join us for days out, evenings and some overnight stays.

I am a UK citizen but resident in Spain (Lanzarote) and here are the questions which are hurting my head at the moment:
  1. As a Spanish resident, I am trying to understand the tax payable on the purchase. From what I have read, it looks like that a lista 7 registered boat (private) to my use (also private) would have the least amount of tax payable (4%).
Does this mean I am better off looking at boats that are already lista 7 registered in Spain? Or, if the boat has had VAT paid and isn't registered in Spain, is it the same level of tax?!

I am really looking to make sure I am clear on costs on top of the purchase price and where I should be looking for a boat...

  2. Does the flag of the boat have bearing on the question above? I am guessing as a resident and the boat being permanently moored in Spain it would require a Spanish flag?

  3. Moorings - the local Marina, Marina Rubicon Playa Blanca, which would be my preferred location, list berths in categories of LOA up to 11m / 12m / 13m etc. Would a Targa 40 (listed as 13.1m) require a 14m berth or is there a bit of lee-way and a 13m would be OK?
In terms of purchase, I think I would prefer a broker purchase to hopefully simplify some of the paperwork and bundle in some training to get familiar and confident with handling the boat.

Appreciate any help you can provide.

ATB, Glyn.

I went through something similar around 20 years ago while buying my first boat. Uk citizen, Italian resident. Assuming you are talking about a pre-owned boat:

1) No further tax to pay on sale price (but do ask others who have recent Spanish experience for confirmation)
2) I registered the boat on the SSR in my brother’s name (need a uk address). You fly the flag of the country where the vessel is registered, plus a smaller ‘courtesy flag’ of the country whose waters you are in if this is different (which gets changed, ie if you sail to Nice you put up a French courtesy flag)
3) There can be 10% tolerance (in my case in both Antibes and St Jean Cap Ferrat this was the case) but this may depend marina to marina. It’s often the beam they are more concerned about than 10cm extra LOA.

Hi Seejay,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it would be pre-owned. I think I am looking around 2002-2008 based on the sort of money I am able to spend.

I know Lanzarote and the Marine Rubicon well. I also own a part share in a Fairline Targa.

My biggest concern for you is whether you'll get the decent use out of the boat considering the unfriendly atlantic seas, the limited cruising grounds and limited places to visit.

Hi Pete,

I take your point but the only other option would be to base the boat somewhere else and jump on a plane to use it. I think I would rather have it local to me so I can spend time on it relaxing even when not leaving the berth. I could see us being happy just bay hopping and cruising between the marinas on the island & Fuerteventura. Just spending time on the boat and getting some quiet time has a value to me. I previously owned a smaller boat in the UK which was moored at Poole and we only went from Poole to Swanage and along to Milford on Sea but we still enjoyed owning it. It got us out on the water and away from the crowds on the beaches.

I guess your Targa isn't at Marina Rubicon then?

I guess that it would be mostly day-tripping to the beach at Papagayo or over to Furtaventura for the day. Plenty of small mobos in the Rubicon.
They all tend to be smaller merry fisher type boats from my recollection.

Very few, if any, 40 foot sports cruisers. Considering the number of pints I've downed in Lani's bar, I'd know if there was and Fairline Targas!

Oi! Just coz i've moved to the opposition. I've downed quite a few at Lanis and at El Commendatore myself and you think I wouldn't have looked for Targas.
ISTR that there was a nice squeeker moored by the restaurants.

There was but it was a big one. There was a big Azi there too.

But I've never seen anyone on them let alone seen them move!

Plenty of bigger boats down the other end of the Marina - away from Lanis and towards Blue Note. Even a really nicely kept Targa 38 called Alfie Moon (not sure if the owner is a member of the forum).

Where did u get 13.1m for targa 40 from?

My fairline data sheet quotes 12.25m so well under 13m

I had picked that figure up from a for sale listing but each listing seems to have a different figure! I'll use yours for my cost calculations - thanks.
