Maltese Falcon is most probably registered in the Cayman Islands - they are a very reputable Registry - none of this 'Flag of Convenience' stuff like (say) St Vincent or Honduras - and they do have high standards.
Pose value is everything in big yachts, including where you flag the boat - and there is a lot of pose value (and reassurance of quality standards) to be had from flying a red duster, especially when compared to some other flags.
Her rig was (I think) originally called the 'Dynaship' and the concept was invented many years ago, as a possible means of wind assisted propulsion for large commercial vessels.
It never took off, I think largely because of the huge research, design and development costs that would be needed to get a rig set up on a ship. It would appear that Mr. Perkins has taken the first step towards large commercial ships being equipped with these rigs in the not too distant future - especially if oil prices keep on increasing.
I would guess that his organisation now holds what must be the most comprehensive set of data ever produced for this type of rig - and being a venture capitalist I would not be surprised if he is behind future development of sail assisted commercial vessels using this rig.
The possibilities are endless.
I 'tip my lid' to him for leading the way in such a exciting new field of sail propulsion.
