Just a lovely yacht...

Maltese Falcon is most probably registered in the Cayman Islands - they are a very reputable Registry - none of this 'Flag of Convenience' stuff like (say) St Vincent or Honduras - and they do have high standards.

Pose value is everything in big yachts, including where you flag the boat - and there is a lot of pose value (and reassurance of quality standards) to be had from flying a red duster, especially when compared to some other flags.

Her rig was (I think) originally called the 'Dynaship' and the concept was invented many years ago, as a possible means of wind assisted propulsion for large commercial vessels.
It never took off, I think largely because of the huge research, design and development costs that would be needed to get a rig set up on a ship. It would appear that Mr. Perkins has taken the first step towards large commercial ships being equipped with these rigs in the not too distant future - especially if oil prices keep on increasing.

I would guess that his organisation now holds what must be the most comprehensive set of data ever produced for this type of rig - and being a venture capitalist I would not be surprised if he is behind future development of sail assisted commercial vessels using this rig.
The possibilities are endless.
I 'tip my lid' to him for leading the way in such a exciting new field of sail propulsion.

Pose value, plus...

Together with some tax avoidance considerations, maybe?

I'm with the positive vote - she's fantastic! And lovely. WOW. And in a hundred years you'll all think she's beautiful, if a little quaint. If we live that long /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For a real square rigged ship look here The Stad Amsterdam knocks all those Perinis for six. Not to mention the staggeringly ugly Tenacious, Lord Nelson, Prince William et al.

Just add "air" in front of 'draft'.

You can not compare the ships. Stad Amsterdam is a passenger vessel, the other are sail training vessels. One takes a bunch of cocktail sipping muppets out for a motor, the others do valuable work with youngsters, disabled persons, etc.

Granted Lord Nelson and Prince William are not the prettiest square riggers out there but they both do great work. I'm not sure you can put Tenacious ugly category though
