Junk rig, or junk journalism?

It seems people long ago gave up looking at or indeed knowing anything about photo's or for that matter film clips when attributing captions, the aircraft documentaries on Sky are almost guaranteed to produce at least one howler per episode.

It seems that she was designed as a "junk yacht" (see also: wherry yacht) and not as a "junk rigged yacht". From the Boleh Trust's website (http://www.bolehproject.com/):

Boleh’s unusual design was influenced by the dhows, junks and other sailing craft Commander Kilroy saw during his service with the Fleet Air Arm between the wars. He created a sea-kindly, broad beamed vessel of just over 40ft, heavily constructed of Malayan ‘chengai’ (a hardwood one and a half times as heavy as oak) and designed to be at her best in ocean trade winds. The sliding gunter rig, with wishbone booms based on those used in Chinese Junks, and unstayed quadraped mast allow for easy reefing and short handed sailing, while providing excellent accommodation space below decks.

Given the title of the article

I don't think I should
Perhaps if you read it rather than trying to be a smarty, it is described as being based on rigs used in Chinese junks. You will also find what we describe as "junk" rigs is only one type of rig used on junks. The term is used in western circles as convenient shorthand for what is called a Lugsail or Sampan sail and one its defining characteristics is having battens to put sail area forward of the mast which describes the boat in question.

So the author is not making any mistake or misleading, he is only reporting the explanation given by the designer.

So, if you want to have a go at anybody it is the provider of the information on the website quoted by JumbleDuck.

It may have been "junk-rigged" at some time in the past but the photo provided certainly bears no resemblance to any junk that I have seen. And I say that having been brought up in Singapore as a nipper and having sailed in Hong Kong for about 12 years. Oh and I am sitting looking at a model of a Singapore junk made about the same time as this rather peculiar boat.

Anyway, the "quadraped" mast is much more intriguing than the sails. I wonder why they didn't simply go for a single half-stayed mast like the real junks? The quadraped must have made deck work more than a bit crowded.

Since you seem determined to pick a fight... welcome to my 'ignore list'.

I'm sure your services are required elsewhere as at this very moment some-one, somewhere may be about to post something derogatory about Bavarias.
Enjoy the rest of your life.

I remember seeing that boat as a kid ( all carvings, painted dragons, eyes and all, to a kids mind iirc) ' parked ' around the riverbanks of the river Rother at Rye- it was very junk-like in size, style and rig. Perhaps the pic in the article is the only one the subby had to hand before publication? Do journalists actually go to the office still, or file copy ' for assembly' from home?

Fwiw I think you are being a touch harsh on Mr T, and not your usual good humoured self ...

I have had run-ins with Tranona in the past.
It would be fair to say that we don't see eye to eye about anything. Certainly not when it comes to boats.

So, I took a step back: this is only an internet forum, not a matter of life or death.
And now I have adopted a 'don't bother me and I won't bother you' attitude.
It has served me well till tonight.

For whatever reason, tonight Tranona seemed determined to pick a fight.
Life's too short - a quick broadside and 'hello ignore list'. That should be the end of it.

Yeah, me too.

Tranona's style is that there is a right view about everything (which - surprise, surprise - is the one he has) and that it's an important and deadly serious matter to correct those that don't have it.

I'm sure we are all guilty of thinking we are right. Certainly I am. But some of us live in a world where there is usually more than one way of looking at things and a little tolerance and good humour smooths things along.

We are here to enjoy ourselves. So I try to avoid fights and just treat any one who uses the 'I am right, you are wrong' style of post as part of the quaint local colour.

I have decided to try to be tolerant of the views of those who aren't tolerant of my views. Or, if you prefer (as you say) there's always the ignore list . . .
