June in the west country

Sadly no croissants were offered during my stay. Sadly the office and ablutions facility that overlooked the inner harbour are now derelict with temporary showers nearby and the office towards the Barbican.

Given Salcombe’s previous poor reputation for mooring fees, £20 for an average sized cruiser was the cheapest of my stop overs.

I've just got back from a trip west from Torquay my home berth yesterday.
Just be aware if you are going to Falmouth in June? There is an International Sea shanty Festival every year, and this year was on on from 13 to 15th June, but it usually starts unofficially the day before. There is also always The Classic Rally on same time at the Haven Marina which is booked up solid 7 years in advance so no berths available. The Classics also book berths for attending yachts at both other local marinas as well, plus visitor moorings booked in advance, but only for the Classics attendees. Everyone else is 1st come first served.
I actually enquired about a berth while attending the Shanty festival and was told none available this year and has been the same 3 years running.
I spent 4 days on the Haven anchourage with 2 days worried about leaving the boat, as there were so many visiting yachts trying to attend and not using any consideration of anchors and swinging room. In previous years of using the anchourage normally there are only usually 8-10 yachts? Over the Shanty weekend there were 30!!
The town also had in excess of 60,000 people.

A great musical event, great vibes around the town, but very, very busy.

They also don't have a water taxi as the last one ceased trading and has not been replaced as of 24th June.
The harbour master tells me, he has no intention of supplying an alternative.
Just a thought for future visits in June.

On the charts that's Mixtow Pill, with a bridge ashore from the pontoons, to the cafe.

Facilities — Mixtow Marine

A short walk up the hill gets you to the caravan site, which has a small shop for all the basic essentials.

Take the dinghy, not the yot.

Very limited number of berths, and that rock to the downstream side going in claims regular victims. They've reinforced the mark pole now (bent...again...), so with luck you'll end up lying alongside that...

We are based in Dartmouth. We almost never stay in Marinas when cruising. Better choices are anchorages, mooring balls or harbour authority pontoons in Dartmouth, Salcombe, Newton Ferrers, Plymouth, Polperro, Foyey ect. Most have harbour taxis.
