June in the west country

Of course it’s no good in a Westerly. My recommendation was for Easterlies.
Ooooer You've just upset the rather militant Owners' Club

Penmarlam Quay up the Fowey river will be ideal for you. Pontoon with facilities ashore and easy cycling access. The walking around Fowey is sublime too. You might have to wait for a berth to come free.

@ashtead

On the charts that's Mixtow Pill, with a bridge ashore from the pontoons, to the cafe.

Facilities — Mixtow Marine

A short walk up the hill gets you to the caravan site, which has a small shop for all the basic essentials.

Is the shop and laundrette still there? Apparently there was uproar when the locals found out the new site owners planned on replacing the tents with posh log cabins.

Sssssh! Don't give away ALL the secrets - like Polperro.... ;)
Yup, went there and an hour later the wind veered round to the SE and picked up a bit. We dinghied back to the boat and left, but extracting ourselves from the two buoys was challenging in the narrow entrance, with the swell and a huge great cat moored opposite. One occasion i was glad to get to sea.

Yes, I was thinking of this one too. Not sure about the easy cycling, Walked up the hill behind it with a bag of laundry to do in the camp site on top. Sheesh  Met your son there too and parking shouldn't be a problem.

I wouldn't rush across Lyme Bay either. If its calm Lyme Regis is nice to anchor just outside the harbour if you have a fin keel. Same with Beer and Brixham, anchor just north of the harbour in the bay. Use the public door at the back of the fish market to buy very fresh fish (y)
Lyme Regis is one of the nicer coastal towns to visit, IMO, but the anchorage can be pretty rolly even in calm weather. To the south west it’s open sea all the way from Brazil! We spent a very uncomfortable night there, having drifted across from Brixham, being thrown around down below. Probably a better bet with a bit of north or east in the wind.

Exactly the same could be said of the lower reaches of the Fowey yet people’s determination to stick it out always amazed me, I used to clear off up to Wiseman’s reach where one could very comfortably sit out a SW storm.

A bit of mild thread resurrection

With brisk Westerlies returning yesterday evening it is perhaps surprising how bouncy it can get in the Yealm on the ebb and how the wind follows the valley round the 90 degree bend to the upstream pontoon

QAB is particularly grim right now I dread to think what it is like in a proper gale.

There is a fair old fetch there.

If you take a direct line SW out of QAB marina between the Mountbatten Breakwater and Penlee Point the next land you would meet is in Brazil some 4300 miles off.

.

Not helped by the Northern pontoons extending beyond the marina breakwater so are relying on the outer harbour one.

Fortunately I have managed to reduce the snatching by having some thick three strand rope taking the load off my normal warps

(Edit clarification on which breakwater)

Leaving near low water today I noticed a couple of sections where the timber(?) were missing.

Had I known my allocated berth was going to be towards the end of D and just how exposed that section is then I would have gone elsewhere. Most likely Sutton Harbour and the cost be damned!

Not long until the first named storm of the season then things really liven up.

Back in 2023 Storm Antoni started on the 4th August and was quickly followed by Storm Betty on the 18th. We had to run for Falmouth on the 3rd and had 50 knots over the deck on the 4th.

My boat was unattended in Plymouth last year in June for the week that included the unseasonably strong winds that meant only ten percent of the RTIR entries actually finished.

Thank goodness it was in Sutton Harbour, at the very top!
We have had a few blustery summers in the south west over the last few years.

My only memory of our stay in Sutton some years ago is of the croissants that come free with the morning coffee on Sundays. I’ve no idea if this still happens.
