Just heard on radio news:

Four dutch sailors jumped overboard and into the Moray Firth to escape the wrath of a fifth crewmember who had "gone berserk". The fifth man, a Ukranian, has just given himself up to police.

Having just returned from checking our boat here on the Scottish East coast, the nutter must have been REALLY scary to make the very cold and rough water the better option between four guys facing one berserk type.

Dangerous stuff this marine lark!

He was Ukranian and was the mate on board. He made a few accusations against the other crewmembers then took over the ship and at one point tried to drive the boat ashore but ended up just going round in circles on the anchor chain. Thankfully the anchor held in place (how we don't know). His initial call was a mayday reporting that the boat was on fire and that they needed immediate medical help this soon changed. He set off his DSC and also activated his epirb bothof which worked very well. (We were receiving calls from all over europe about it.)

He was firing flares at his ship mates (and the lifeboat) which I think is a fairly good excuse to get out of his way. With the lifeboat waiting they were all recoevered rapidly. Only 2 actually entered the water the other 2 just jumped onto the lifeboat.

How do I know all this....I was the Officer running the incident for the coastguard.....now you all know where I work!

Safer lives, safer ships, cleaner seas.

My God, He must be the first and only "illegal" not to want to be landed in the UK.

Come on guys lets get a grip here and start a fund to imprison the Dutch for deserting the ship and a lottery grant of several millions for the poor Ukranian<s>
