A little story. I bought a new Ford 3 odd years ago. Oz made 4l 6cyl in line RWD. I don't do many kilometers so after 12 months decided it was time for an oil and filter change. Drained the oil OK. Came to the filter quite hard to reach but got my fists onto it expecting it to loosen. No way. I tried vey hard with various attachments till the body started to distort.. Eventually resorted to banging screw driver right through the filter to try to undo. The metal just tore. A bit desperate by now as only car was stranded. Got a mechanic from the dealer to come. He managed to loosen it by bashing on the edge with a screw driver/chisel like and finally it came loose. Yes he said they come up with a new design filter now. But in the factory with the old style which had a leak problem they just tightened them up. Ye sit sure was tight. Next replacement fitted by me ok and no leaks. olewill
On competition engines at least it isn't unknown for them to come loose, quite often wired on. I cracked an alloy casting once trying to slacken a filter someone else had tightened.
