Jotun Marine Paint

[ QUOTE ]
When I was in Jotun factory some years ago, which is near my home. I saw tins of International, does that tell you something?

Yes it tells me that like a lot of 'Specialised Marine' products, we are simply being taken advantage of!

Jotun paint is made all over the place. I actually went to the factory in Sydney to pick up my last lot of AF. It was no cheaper though than buying though coop.

The best AF is always the heavier tins.

When I bought mine in November I was told SeaGuardian was being dropped but Shepherds still had some stock. On Jotun's website there are heavier grades of SeaForce but I think Shepherds were only doing the 30.

OK, So here is an explanation from a reliable source:-

Seaforce 30 was brought out to replace Seaguardian about 3 years ago. The official line from Jotun was that it was the new “improved” version of Seaguardian. The cynics deduced that “improved” meant improved margins for Jotun as the new product contained less copper oxide. At the time copper was making $7000 a tonne and Jotun were losing money on Seaguardian.

Seaforce 30 is still a good product – the lower copper content is ameliorated by newer technology and the presence of other non-copper base active ingredients.

Seaguardian is still being made in limited quantities for the Dutch market where SF30 does not have type approval.

Because of the popularity of Seaguardian some have managed to persuade them to make new batches. How much longer this will last, is not known.

Jotun have been asked to give people what they want and to charge an appropriate price, but they are a $2 billion company, what is not known is, will they listen?

Apparently, there are no issues with compatibility between Seaforce 30 & Seaguardian – they are entirely interchangeable. The only issue might be a slight colour difference, but you’d get this anyway if you touched up Seaguardian with Seaguardian after 6 – 12 months.

Because of the popularity of Seaguardian some are petitioning Jotun to keep making it. In the end though, when Holland falls into line, it is feared it will be gone for good?

But if you look at Jotun's websitehttp://www.jotun.com/www/com/20020113.nsf?OpenDatabase&db=/www/com/20020115.nsf&v=10F2&e=uk&m=912&c=4F870008A7E593BFC1256FE90041DD51 it lists Seaforce 30 as the economy one and Seaforce 60 and Seaforce 90 as the better ones. I understood Seaguardian was previously teh top one and presumably therefore the equivalent replacement would be the 90 but it appears Shepherds are only doing the 30 - the economy one.
Their claimed service lives are based on commercial vessels spending most of their time doing a good speed; I would have thought a yacht which spends most of its time moored is a more demanding case and needs the superior one. In fact I was told that Seaguardian was rated for stationery structures this being teh most demanding application of all.
