OK, so what's changed? Apparently you now have to be a professional to buy and use the stuff. Why? Have they added depleted uranium or something? Are there any forumites with a professional antifoul application qualification? If yes, did you get an A or a first? Can you bluff your way into a 5 litre tin of blue Sea force 30, or do you now have to produce certificates? Just seems bizarre to me and a bit annoying :(

This from Bayside Marine:

Please Note: SeaForce 30 is now a discontinued Jotun line and so we only have a strictly limited supply. Please contact us on 01803 856771 prior to ordering to confirm availability. SeaForce 30 is being replaced with Mare Nostrum

Bayside also sell through eBay & some still but colour range restricted to Red or Black

Also see from SML website that Seaforce 30 only available now in Red or Black. No sign of Seaqueen at all

Got the heads up on the East Coast Forum and today ordered the last two Seaqueen tins in their stock. It really does last three years by all accounts. No doubt its efficacy is the cause of its demise

Seaforce 30 isn't discontinued - it's an almost as good blend but restricted to marine professionals. Therefore easily obtained by anyone through trade paint suppliers.

IIRC, the same requirement was in place by SML on Seaqueen which I bought in November. Needless to say, there was no investigation into my professional status:ambivalence:

Sounds like the sort of thing you have to write on the tin to be allowed to put the good stuff in it :)

I think it said much the same last time I bought some back in 2011. I'm fairly unprofessional when it comes to applying antifoul...

Its only licensed by the HSE for professional ( commercial?) use.

Maybe the HSE are cracking down on them.

I was 'warned' of this a year ago by Jotun's Yacht Paints technical rep. The parent company - a big one - is mainly interested in commercial contracts and contacts and does not want the corporate aggro of a prosecution by the UK's H&S wonks for a few small tins of SeaQueen - good stuff that it is.

I like Jotun paint. Only ever used the commercial stuff such as Pilot. The issues are more likely regulations to do with sales. Similar thing with welding gas etc, some companies wont deliver to a non commercial address. Good marine paint such as Jotun and International have some pretty nasty ingredients which I think authorities are worried that hobbyists might pour down drains whereas commercial outfits have to account for COSHH items?

Can't see how any so-called regulation need prevent a supplier from selling it to you. Who applies it for you is down to you, surely.

What is a "professional"?

I get this term bandied about in my work and I don't like it. Its often used by lawyers, accountants etc. They are "professionals".

I define is as "they get paid for doing it".
It doesn't define competence, commercialism, industry or anything esle.

I suppose it means you have a certificate of competency - perhaps like the RYA.
1. Start Antifouling
2. Competent Antifouler
3. Day Antifouler (allowed to complete more than one boat during daylight hours)
4. Antifoul Master ( with a commercial endorsement if you are doing it as a business)

You can spot the qualified antifoul specialists in your yard at fitting out. They now look like this.....

I have currently Jotun Peguard HD and I have been give a few litres of Jotun Sea guardian. I have used Jotun for some years in blue. Typical of this year it has lasted 8 weeks before need to wipe slime and occasional barnacles off. Now it needs another wipe over since being wiped over last week. So no special ingredients. Yes I am fussy about clean bottom.
Yes it is a hot summer (forecast tomorrow Sat 44 degrees max) so no problem getting into the water to clean it. I am currently using a soft cloth but will soon resort to scotch brite then sand paper to havee it mostly sanded off by April pull out.

Products and tin sizes vary from country to country, some is made in Spain, some in the UK factory. Seaqueen hasn't been available here for some time and Seaforce 30 is only available for commercial use in dark red in 20L drums, not sold in the leisure chandlers. Their leisure products are under the Mare Nostrum brand, in various colours at much higher prices, RRP around 50 euro/L, slightly cheaper than International and about the same as Hempel. Anyone heading south should bring their antifoul with them at UK prices.

Bit confused by this. Do you mean Penguard HB? That's an epoxy primer (2 pack) not an antifoul.
