I’d not dismiss it on those grounds, plenty of Oysters have headed to the Arctic, including doing the NW passage. A quick Google will reveal some examples.
There is a guy with a 48 who does all the big offshore races and does very well so I guess they sail well. See Sailing Florence on YouTube, they just went to Svalbard in a 37. How high does he want to go?Thank you for the suggestion. I will pass that one. I guess they sail better too? One argument for the Jongert is the steel hull, if at one point they want to sail to higher latitudes.
Yes I would bet more Oysters have been to high latitudes than Jongerts by a big marginI’d not dismiss it on those grounds, plenty of Oysters have headed to the Arctic, including doing the NW passage. A quick Google will reveal some examples.
It’s all in the air, they don’t have definite plans. There is a guy with a 48 who does all the big offshore races and does very well so I guess they sail well. See Sailing Florence on YouTube, they just went to Svalbard in a 37. How high does he want to go?
Beautiful boat. I don’t understand their fixation with Jongert either. I guess it has to do with their luxurious allureIf he really wants an icebreaker then:

The point being that there are some interesting options in that price/size bracket and in comparison the Jongert would have to be alot cheaper than 300k.
……but if they buy a 50 year old big Jongert they will immediately have very definitive financial liabilities to fundIt’s all in the air, they don’t have definite plans.
I told them. What about mooring? What about the logistics of maintenance? To no avail. Otherwise they are very rational people… I hope the surveyor will tell them and they will listen to him.……but if they buy a 50 year old big Jongert they will immediately have very definitive financial liabilities to fund
They are both doctors. I sent them the oyster for comparison. If they wouldn't rather have that oyster then it's a doctor they need not a surveyor![]()
I agree. I have been on a smaller Oyster once and was very impressed. The relatively modest price for that Oyster 53 (and even more so the $299k one in the US) surprised me! I'd always thought that recent-ish Oysters were well out of reach but not so - whilst I'm not going back to owning a sailing boat now, if I was I'd be looking at those. Remarkable.
I sent them the Oyster and they said the boat needs to have a steel hull. I give upIf they wouldn't rather have that oyster then it's a doctor they need not a surveyor![]()
Can’t choose themParents eh?
Explain to them that aluminium is the new steel and look at a cigale (or some other vaguely modern design). Failing that please keep us informed of what happens.I sent them the Oyster and they said the boat needs to have a steel hull. I give up
Haha, yes, that aft cabin. I didn’t want to bring it up. They must have thought about it though. An elephant in the cabin… I sent the Cigale. Beautiful boat and seems to be in great condition. I think it’s out of their budget though and I remember they were concerned about aluminum corrosion.Explain to them that aluminium is the new steel and look at a cigale (or some other vaguely modern design). I want to know how they are going to fight over that aft cabin.
Somebody didnt tell Judy Lomax that you can't do high lattitudes in a GRP boat - she and her late husband did countless trips north in their Beneteau First 345 Cloud Walker. Judy LomaxI sent them the Oyster and they said the boat needs to have a steel hull. I give up
I would be more concerned about steel corrosion on an old Jongert, in comparison to potential corrosion on an aluminium boat.I sent the Cigale. Beautiful boat and seems to be in great condition. I think it’s out of their budget though and I remember they were concerned about aluminum corrosion.
