My father and his friend are looking to buy a Jongert 19s. Anyone on here has experience with those? Any known problems? Also interested in what to expect in yearly maintenance and mooring costs? They are looking for a 1980s built and fully refitted.

PS: I think their biggest problem will be who gets the master cabin!

Wow just looked this up, gorgeous boats. Commenting out of interest but I can’t help with the questions!

Mooring costs will depend on where they want to keep it obviously, it’s a big boat for the uk and none for sale here at present. Finding a 20m mooring in their chosen cruising area might be a challenge, a mooring in a popular Med Marina could be €20-30k/year based on what others I know are paying for similar sizes.

Another thought on this, hopefully already considered; these boats are 40-50 years old now, made of steel. Absolutely vital that a pre-purchase hull survey is done by a surveyor experienced in steel boats, including plating thickness measurement throughout. Corrosion may not be evident to a visual inspection.

I have sailed across Med from Gib to Trogia on larger 23 (Metres not feet🤣) and they are great but pricey to run we had big Merc diesel lovely3? cabins each with shower plus crew in bow . Had hydraulics for reefing hauling mainsail and genny, . All I can say is you need a big budget to run ideally 4 to sail but very comfy ,will cross Atlantic with ease or into pacific etc Guess it depends on usage and conditions but not a uk boat really

Thank you. Yes, gorgeous boats. I will be happy to test sail when they decide on one. They will obviously get a thorough survey from a specialized surveyor as purchase price will be around 300.000 Euro as I understood. A winch on that thing probably costs more than my boat cost me altogether… That’s why I was wondering about maintenance. Sorry I forgot to say they want to keep it in the Mediterranean for a while and then cross the Atlantic. I think they plan to sail the two of them, but I guess I will be happy to join them for a while.

The one I sailed on was about £1.5m when last sold I seem to recall -it can be sailed by 2 of corse with hydraulic bowthruster but for watches crossing Med at night 4 is preferred and 6 ideal . You can pick up old smaller ones but budget for renovation could easily touch 50k on a 300k boat I suspect .

Thank you. They are looking at fully renovated ones. But then ten years of boat ownership made me understand what an experienced sailer told me in the beginning: “With boats so many things can go wrong… and they do!”

The decks alone could eat double that 50k. If it needs major refit / renovation I’d not touch it.

Last one they looked at had rotten teak and rusting superstructure. Told them to walk away…
You need to persuade them to not even look!. The £300k is just a down payment to a lifetime of high expenditure. Why do they think they can get a £2-3m boat for less than 10% of new cost? simple, the running costs are little different from those of a new boat - maybe even higher. A boat like that "owns" you as its slave and if you don't keep it up its value disappears while you still pick up the tab for berthing and maintaining it. Mugs game.

Couple of pertinent questions to the broker, first how many owners has it had and then how long has it been on the books.

Thank you. I agree. I tried to talk my father out of the whole thing. Used the same arguments you brought up. To no avail.

Leaving aside the running costs it’s how they sail -with a hydraulic mainsail up haul it’s a slow job to rotate the boom to reduce sail so not ideal plus my recollection was the wheel steering wasn’t that responsive. There are advantages like the covered hard dodger to shelter on plus with a mizzen a large scanner position and the large diesel can give a steady 8kn under the mizzen alone at night with little disturbance . On topic of decks the crew will need to semco twice a year ideally assuming real teak plus loads of capping rails to varnish. There do seem to be a few for saile but maybe a look at bills for last 5 years might be insightful . Might be interesting to go on some of the viewings though and see if any recent survey reports before travelling.

Thank you. I pass on the advice and hope for the best! My girlfriend said it’s called midlife crisis and it can beset any man at any time in life…
