How nice was the weather yesterday?? We took the dingy up the Hamble from Mercury to the Jolly Sailor as the wife wasn't too took on the wind.

We've been to the pub many times but only for drinks, this time we stayed for lunch. I know in the past quite a few have said the food wasn't anything special, but we sat outside in the sun, had a couple of beers then food was delivered......... and it was bloody great!!

Me and the good lady both commented how good it was as we hadn't been expecting anything too good..... even the kids cleared their plates!! It wasn't cheap, but on the same hand wasn't expensive...... we shall be returning.

No connection etc.... just credit where it's due.

Paul, interesting comments. Have not been to the JS for years and there were some reports on here of it not being too great, but on those comments we will be going soon.

As you say, the weather was just lovely yesterday and I was delighted to have to get my daughter back home to go to a friends party at 2pm ...:confused:

.. Did you enjoy the rapids coming through the bridge at Swanwick on the flood. on Saturday afternoon we ventured down there from mercury & we sat and watched a few boats being pushed around by the tide.. very impressive.
 
I know, we almost didn't eat there purely on what we had heard, but like I said, our meal was very good..... You watch, next time we go it'll be rubbish!! ;)

We timed our trip so we arrived just before 12 and was gone by 2 so not much flow at those times, but we did use the high water to explore along the edges of the shore on the way back..... We've got 2 young boys and they love to pretend we're being pirates or that we might find crocodiles in the reeds!!......... Happy days!!
 
We spent a fun hour on Saturday going through all the routes up Badman Creek and round to the "Pirates Ship Wreck".... as my 7yr Daughter has named it.. just a shame someone has chosen to tie up a very tired catamaran blocking the way to the rope swing and entrance to the secret tunnel at the top of the creek..

Secret tunnel??........ How did you know about our secret tunnel, James won't be happy about that!! :)

He must be right, my memory isn't what it should be, I must have been thinking of the Blackwall tunnel.... silly me ;)

While I'm not allowed to see anything of course, there was a pretty mean tree house in the large oak tree on the left as you approach that tunnel I've not found... I seem to remember climbing up it some decades ago, was pretty safe then, now it looks a little high! :eek:
 
We went friday night, 3 glasses of wine and 1 pint of peroni, £18.00!!!!!! jeez what a rip off.

Last time we ate there it was rubbish, cold, undercooked meat, had to wait ages, wasps everywhere to the point we left early, but has been good on other occasions, oh and they have dropped the loyalty scheme, sad really as its our local to the boat.

Wow, it's amazing what you can learn about things you've not found!! What other than the tree house have you not found, so we can be the first to lay claim?? Right little bunch of pirates we are!! :)

You mean the wrecked barge half way up Badnam Creek?

I walked on the deck as a kid.

Burgundyden, I can assure you it is Badman Creek, my daughter would be most annoyed if anyone told her otherwise! (OK I know it Badnam Creek but its not so pirate like is it!) .

Its not a barge, its a old wooded hulled twin engine boat, topsides long since rotted away.... unless you are pushing the point where you will be receiving a letter from the Queen its not the one you walked on. :):D

Ah, ok, longtime since I was in there.

I mention it because, there is a wreck in there of the Sandringham, she was at one time a Portsmouth to Ryde Ferry, I think her stern is still visible, the steam engine went on to pump water up the tower at the Gales Brewery at Horndean.

Ah yes, I remember the days. A port & lemon for the missus a pint of Watneys and a gallon of 4 star all for under £2 ;)

Large glass of plonk £5 pint of lager £3. Sounds about right give or take.

We've had some good meals in there. They seem to manage to cope with quite a few people, it's a popular place. Strangely enough the company who run the Jolly Sailor bought our local quite recently, the Black Horse in Iver Heath. They made a wonderful job of refurbishing.

Yep - thats what I ahve heard and with that and poor food reports I have given the place a wide berth.......May try it again and see for myself!

With the exception of the rather good Hall and Woodhouse beer I don't venture near the place. Every time I've eaten there it has been expensive and of not good quality. Pre cooked and frozen everything. I went there about 4 weeks ago and thought - hmm nothing changed here. Fortunately somebody else insisted on paying. And it is close enough to walk there from the office - even that does not tempt me.
 
I have said this before, but here goes again.

The food at the Jolly Sailor is OK but nothing special. However, what really irks me about it is that it used to be a special place to go for a drink - a true sailor's pub with a real atmosphere which owed a lot to the rather quirky interior layout.

Now it's just another bland pub chain establishment serving food, albeit in a brilliant location. Not a bad pub, but not the place it was.

Eeeeek; I'm turning into me dad :eek:

I quite agree, ruined when they did away with the front bar.

I quite agree... you are turning into your dad.

JS is OK in my experience, neither good nor bad, acceptable food at prices that are not uncommon.
