Jolly Sailor pub, Hamble

Up until about 2003/4 it was excellent.
Now it is nice, but not much better than average and rather pricey.

I used to live directly opposite in the tiny houses at Burselden Hard and would go across by inflatable.
On more than one (many) occasion I had to walk home and collect the tender another day as it was high and dry on the mud.
Maybe it has been dredged since, but the last time I went there (2005) it would still dry out on mid sized to spring tides.

haven't been there for 12 months or so but last time the food was poor, overpriced and the service was very poor!

as others say Waterside bar at Mercury or IMO best of the lot is Banana wharf at port Hamble.

as for tide access, few hours either side of high you should be ok but it does dry there.

Food VERY EXPENSIVE, but quite good.
Very commercial - not many locals.

Your dinghy will dry out at LW - stuck in a pub - blast!!!!

in 1965 they did the best ploughmans for miles around, the pint was less than 2 bob and the ploughmans was 2/9d haven't been back since:D

Lol, I was 2:-)

Used to visit there by sailing dinghy when I was younger and a couple of times since. Beer quite good, food OK but expensive and the kids didn't like it much. Could do so much better.

Thanks for the replies. They are all consistent! So it looks like Mercury then. Can you just turn up in a tender and tie up there for free?

Hahahahahaha free? I very much doubt it.

Mercury is owned by MDL. The word "free" does not exist (unless you berth at another MDL marina like wot I do).

yes, but that was Jolly Sailer exterior and studio interior and that was the start of its downfall.

The studio was the exact replica of the inside of the pub, but a few years ago, it was bought by a chain, gutted and rebuilt inside, so not recognisable anymore - there is still a picture hangin up of the cast though.
Foods gone downhill hill a bit at Mercury recently.
The Bugle in Hamble has lovely food and beers.

have been there lunchtime for a sandwich and pint many times and quite good, I also go as they let you take your dog in with you and not many will allow that, not the cheapest but average for the area. Never seen the pontoon dry out.

Waters Edge in Mercury is so inconsistent, you would be far better advised to go to Hamble village as others have indicated.

RIN,

Mindful of the general average or sub-average feedback about the Jolly Sailor in the past on this forum, we went there a week or 2 ago (yes, 2010, this century, unlike most of the dinosaur postings above!!!) and we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and presentation of the food. For a waterside location in the Solent area I don't think it's any more expensive than the others. Beer was good too!

Re the navigation aspects, we had our RIB on the inside of the pontoon from HW-1 to HW+1 and had about 1.8m depth. I'm not the man to ask what the depth was in ancient times, I'm afraid.

My top tip? Ignore the various people that have obviously had something to gripe about the place in the last 30 years and and have it in for the place; just go and make your own mind up! And no, I have no connections with the place at all, I just believe in credit where credit's due!

Actually I paid in cash..........
