Had a three course meal there last night, with a few drinks - £60, so not cheap, but the food & service was good. There are better places to go, but it was a good evening, so can't complain.

My top tip? Ignore the various people that have obviously had something to gripe about the place in the last 30 years and and have it in for the place; just go and make your own mind up! And no, I have no connections with the place at all, I just believe in credit where credit's due!

Good tip that. At the end of the day it is very subjective, depends on the weather and all sorts of things. You can't beat your own experience and if you don't like it, well don't go again.

Waters Edge in Mercury is so inconsistent, you would be far better advised to go to Hamble village as others have indicated.

The last time we went all three of us were dreadfully ill.
We put it down to dodgy mixed fish platter.

Its convenient but you loose the special Hamble atmosphere, if you are looking for charm you cant beat arriving by dinghy , the Jolly sailor is perfect.
My dinghy has dried out on the outside of the pontoon at low water, we had to stay for another pint before it floated away.
I expect the channel fills with silt until the river gets into flood following heavy rain which explains why there is such a mixed view on the pontoon depth, perhaps avoid LW springs or at least time your meal for low water so it coming back in when you are ready to leave.

If you enjoy pubs by dinghy and can time for high water you can also try the Horse and jockey , go past the jolly sailor, under the three bridges and turn right at the end, pontoon outside the pub takes about 40 mins at tickover or 10 mins avoiding HM .

You can watch your dinghy dry out but dont panic as you get a second high tide which you return on (4 high tides a day).

RIN,

Mindful of the general average or sub-average feedback about the Jolly Sailor in the past on this forum, we went there a week or 2 ago (yes, 2010, this century, unlike most of the dinosaur postings above!!!) and we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality and presentation of the food. For a waterside location in the Solent area I don't think it's any more expensive than the others. Beer was good too!

Re the navigation aspects, we had our RIB on the inside of the pontoon from HW-1 to HW+1 and had about 1.8m depth. I'm not the man to ask what the depth was in ancient times, I'm afraid.

Actually I paid in cash..........

I too went recently, only a couple of weeks ago, by foot so no idea on mooring but, I thought it was overpriced and pretentious.

Firstly, whats wrong on putting prices on the menu in English! 51/2 ,103/4 etc.( that's five and a half:ten and three quarters etc as I can't do fractions properly on my keyboard)

ordering food is set up Beefeater style but with above average restaurant prices

An hour wait for a salad, risotto and burger is not on

Caterpillars in the salad is not on

£50 for 4 soft drinks and 3 below average meals is an expensive lunch

Of course you could try the new cafe at Universal Marina tother side of the river. Haven't eaten there yet but there is a nice decked area at the rear in amongst the trees. No drying out issues either.

There was the old Lulworth Cafe there which was well regarded I believe but some American long range semi displacement builder has just taken the building and refitted it as their new offices :-) !

Had Breakfast in Nautical Nell's at Universal this morning, £3.99 for full English, very good it was too.
Had a beer there tonight, very happy, I wont be a stranger.

[QUOTE Nicer food at Mercury marina down the river a way.[/QUOTE]

The Waterside at Mercury served rubbish last weekend - much better value at the Waterfront on Shamrock Quay

Now that's a challenge - unless you've been on one of the IWA (Solent) rallies visiting both Curbridge and Botley. A big Spring tide is needed to reach the pub BUT the OS Explorer map shows a landing place just before the Y-junction from which a pleasant walk through the trees takes you to the Horse & Jockey with far more time to enjoy the facilities.
