I have a leak from the back seal on my Johnson raw water pump (TAMD40B) engines. I have taken the pump off now. The intake and outlet areas on the pump are not threaded but are a smooth fitting for the pipes to go into. The top of the pump has a U shaped copper pipe which goes into the pump body by an inch or so and is held by a bracket bolted into the face plate of the pump, but the intake side has a short tail pipe (4" or so) which inserts into the body of the pump but does not appear to be held by anything? I cannot get this copper pipe out and do not want to damage it, does anyone know if its held by something? Both intake and output flanges appear smooth on the inside, i,e, not threaded, I can't work out what holds the pipe in position?

Any ideas?

From memory that pipe should pull out.
However at My age I don't trust My memory too much. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I found a pdf file on the motor at www.marinepartsexpress.com
Shows a "retainer". Think if you remove/ waggle the o ring out the way You will find the object.
Can't You remove the pump with the U shaped tube still attached?
The pump can be serviced with this still attached if You are wary of disturbing said piece.
Google TAMD40B and the sight above will turn up the pdf directly.
Good luck!
