I have aquired an old Johnson Sea Horse 4HP twin cylinder outboard. It appears to run, but I cannot see any tell-tale. also it does not appear to need a kill cord! Does anyone have any info on this motor?

It should have a tell-tale. This motor suffers from the water-tube rubber grommet swelling up and blocking the inlet flow. That grommet is at the top of the water-tube where it enters the power head. If it's a long-shaft be very careful removing the gearbox as you can smash the extension casting. The bolts need undoing in the correct order.
I have pics of the job.

I have an old Johnson 4hp twin (about 1972 vintage) and it does not have a tell tale. The water is mixed with the exhaust gases and comes out of a series of holes under the propeller. If you have some more info, I could see if yours is the same.

That's a point if it's this shape my comments hold true
if it's the older roundy shape, I don't know.
Have you got the serial number?

What age is it? If you don't know the age tell us the model number which should be on the plate on the mounting bracket (or, if not, on a welch plug on the engine)
Not all engines have "pee holes". I think the 4 does not, but tell us the model number then we can check.

LS's picture of the grommet is not of a 4hp they are different and I do not know if the same problem applies.

Very likely it does not have provision for a kill cord. In fact if it runs without one it doesn't have. It may be possible to retro fit one.

MODEL number, not serial number.

Looked at the picture in your link. Thats old!

Yes, like I said it is probably 1972 or so. It was my father's.
It had been lying in the garage for 25 or 30 years and I fixed it up some 6 years ago. Started at the second pull of the cord!

In fact, it was our start in boating. We rented a rowing boat and put the outboard on. It was such fun that we decided to go boating an bought our first boat in 2003. After this one burnt down in 2004 (as the neighboring boat caught fire) we bought the boat we now have in 2004. (see avatar)

Thanks for your helpful replies, in fact they were so quick that I am not prepared to post any pictures yet.

My engine does not look exactly like either of those illustrated.

the Model number is BJ4BRHCOB and the serial number is B016333

It does have eight holes about halfway down the leg, so they will be submerged when running.
It also has two slots on the underside of the plate that is immediately above the prop.

I hope to post pictures tonight, when I have worked out how to do it. Thanks for the help so far.

Hi there, i have exactly the same and works just fine provided you know how to start it. No kill cord though back then they didn't bother with such.Look for a series of small holes 4 on each side of the shaft and the holes at the back of the prop as these are the tell tales.I would appreciate the manual though.Mine has survived a couple of dives as well and lets face it nobody would steal a dinosaur...

I sounds similar to my engine:
The two slots on the underside of the plate is the water intake, the 8 holes halfway down the leg are the outlets for the exhaust gases mixed with water.
You can check this by starting the engine in a bucket of water (take the prop off first) and keep the water at a level where the 8 holes are exposed. You should then see the water mist spray out. BTW, it is not very much water...

Success!
I have done as you suggested and I did have a water mist plus exhaust from some of the holes in the leg. I can't believe I didn't think of taking the prop off myself.

Thanks alot for all the help guys.

As LS says that's an '85 model. In the model number C=8 and O=5.

There is no tell tale (pee hole). the cooling system is not pressurised and there is no thermostat so it should run quite cool.

The arrangement at the top of the water tube is different to that in LS's picture. There is a grommet but I do not know if the same thing can happen as happens on some other models.

No worries if it runs cool but as you do not know its history replacing the water pump impeller would be a wise thing to do at some point. It is easy to access the water pump by unbolting the lower unit from the bottom of the leg. The bolts might need some careful persuasion and the drive shaft may be reluctant to pull out from the crankshaft.
