Snyder is an acclaimed worker in the field of geodesy and map projections. His book, "Map Projections: A working manual" is a fundamental textbook on the shelves of everyone who works in that field; there's a copy on the shelf behind me as I write! He also developed some of the earliest map projections for use with satellite images.

No need to buy the book - it's a free download! But don't bother unless you're prepared for A-level maths. The principles aren't especially difficult, but the resulting maths tends to be complex, especially when taking into account the ellipsoid. But during my working life, this was the "go to" book for anything involving map projections.
