Job in Birmingham.. move boat??

I'm an ex Brummy, living on the Gloucester/South Wales border and sailing from South Devon (previously Solent)

I would definately leave the boat where it is. I sail dinghies on the Severn occasionally, but have no desire to keep the cruiser here. Realisticly you are probably going to lose 1.5 hours each end of the weekend ... big deal!

I live just north of Oxford and keep the boat in Calais, best run 2 hours 55min form home to the first beer on board. Cheap marina pays for the ferry crossings. If you have to travel 3 hours or 4 dosent make much differance. But it rules out the odd evening sail.

I'm West of Brum and do most of my sailing on the south coast (not a boat owner). But i have sailed from Wales and Ireland as well as Harwich and Plymouth. Wales can take as long to get to as Portsmouth because of the roads. Harwich is a long trip but easily do-able for a weekend. I keep thinking I would like to be closer to a good sailing area but really, when you think about it, the Midlands is a great base for most UK coasts. In terms of traveling time I don't think it'd make much difference to you. If you billet south of Brum the trip to Portsmouth is easy peasy.

Wow.. Thanks for all of those messages! I am amazed by how many replies have been posted.. I think my feeling is keep it where it is or think about south Wales. will have to look out for houses near the main commuter roads..

With regards to dinghies I have always sailed dinghies and love them but now I've got a yacht I cant just get rid of it for three years!!!

There are those who think it is the centre of the Universe. But I am a Scouser so I'll not pass any comments! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oh & you don't need to get rid of your yacht to get a dinghy. I have a Laser for weekends at Bala as well as my Pentland. There is almost no overlap between the two they are completely complementary! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you will be working in or around the city and intend driving to work do some 'test' commutes before you buy. I opted for 20 miles south east; commute was reasonable (40-60 mins) and weekend getaway was a doddle. But that was 4 years ago.

Lots of mid-week and evening dinghy sailing available around Brum so you'll be able to sail big boats and little boats. That's another plus for the move /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best of luck

Hail, Sailorman! And a Very Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to Pam and Your Good Self and make sure you get your extension nice and level. Tried 2 or 3 times to PHM you with Xmas greetings, but it came up that you were not accepting messages. Kid and Kidess
