Jizer to clean winches

I have a conisiderable quantity of Jizer left after buying it for engine degreasing.

Is there any reason this would not make an ideal solvent for cleaning winch components when servicing them?

I have used Gunk, which I think is similar, for cleaning winches and other machinery. It woks fine, and you can flush it down the drain.

However, I'm always wary of exposing plastic and rubber components to anything chemical for very long.

Yes, as you do with Gunk.

Me too, but I rinse the paraffin off with meths, which washes off with water.

Jizer will be fine.

In our workshop degreaser we used Jizer and other similar product for over thirty years or so - whatever could be supplied at the best price. Jizer has a nicer smell than Gunk, which for some reason always reminds me of Elsan fluid!

We made a point if rubber/plastic components as well as metal were involved to clean stuff quickly and we always rinsed in hot water. Sometimes we would boil a kettle for the first rinse. The resulting expansion of the components would sometimes shift a bit more stuck on clag.

Getting the components hot proved better for drying - bits would be dry in a minute or so.

Goodness, what state are your winches in?

I love the smell of Gunk in the morning.

I've always used paraffin as it's cheap and effective. Soak for a while then use an old toothbrush and stand to drain before lubricating and reassembling.

Gunk and Jizer are completely different

Jizer was the degreaser in the workshop during my apprenticeship, it hence reminds me of “work”.

My dad seemed to have gallons of gunk so it was the degreaser used for cleaning car parts during the period of my life when cars needed more attention than women, it hence reminds me of “play”.

I’m sure that either would be fine for winches. Noting the good comments re solubility already made.
