Jim Shead boat listing

Its not a real yellow board , it's upstream of Blakes on the Kennet ! ;)

Absolutely, not your good old mainstream board, but on a tributary inhabited by wide and narrow tinny things; quite unspeakable.
(perhaps that comment will divert folks attention from what has become a very, very unpleasant thread)

FWIW I fully support B1 and Richard Shead in trying to calm matters down.

If Jim's site was still around, you could look up the details of all those unspeakable tinny things after they had left nasty black marks all over the splitters.

I am an interested party.

A website that I find to be a useful resource has been removed as a direct result of somebody making a blatantly untrue statement about the copyright status of the material that it contains, in order to induce the site host to remove that content.

I may well become an even more interested party in future, because if Jim Shead doesn't put the information up again, I am ready to do so.

Then by all means go ahead and do that but don't use this site as a shouting board / slanging match to do so...

You cannot suggest his statement was untrue unless you have proof of this, if you do, I say again direct it at the interested parties.

All that will happen here is the thread will turn into one big argument of he said that she said this etc I have seen it time and time before and it will get pulled and then nobody will benefit, trust me.

This is not a platform to promote Jim Sheads website no matter how useful it is.

thank you

I can state that his statement was untrue, because it is self evidently the case that it is untrue.

Tim Mountain is NOT the copyright owner of any factual information relating to a boat that he owns.

Happily, Jim is now in touch with the Open Rights Group who have lawyers that specialise in dealing with silly and spurious copyright claims.

I'm not aware of shouting or engaging in a slanging match, merely of expressing an opinion. Is this one of those dreary forums where disagreement is forbiden?

Jolly good then it looks like you are getting somewhere..

No its not a dreary forum where disagreement is forbidden and that's a very bold statement from a new user...

Stick around a bit longer and you will see for yourself...

If you cant see the slanging match that has started then I suggest you look a bit harder as we will not tolerate threads of an abusive nature, there is expressing an opinion and there is frustration and tone that is coming through here when not agreeing or indeed seeing someone else's opinion.

Like Mayalld, I too will happily host Jim's database in its entirety, if Jim doesn't get it back up.

As has been noted elsewhere, Mr Mountain's efforts to remove the details of his boats has been entirely counterproductive.

Before he got a bee in his bonnet, nobody would have the slightest interest in the entries for Harpagon and its tender, and anybody who alighted on that entry would have had no way of linking it to the owner.

Now, in the interests of protecting his privacy, the boat and its details from archived copies and his association to it are common knowledge.

The Streisland Effect at work.

Isn't it odd how suddenly some new faces are appearing over this....wonder who's stirring things up?

Shame really.... More suited to the trolls on the Lounge.

Well done. I'm sure you feel proud of yourself for your 'achievement' of walking all over someone's wish for privacy.

What the hell is wrong with some people here? It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with an individual's wish for privacy. What matters is that we all have freedom of choice and some people, for a variety of reasons, choose to guard their privacy. Some of you want to take away that individual freedom of choice and attack those who argue for it. What kind of society does that remind you of?

It does appear that his privacy was well and truly private until he started stomping around wishing for privacy, A bit ironic wouldn't you say.
As for the rest of your post, this wasn't a case of taking away an individuals freedom of choice, it was taking away the majority's freedom to view legally held information. What kind of society does that remind you of?

Reading this thread I am struck by the one use of J S's site that seems most important to me and doesn't seem to have got a mention.

If you are researching a new name for your boat and wish to avoid being the 23rd to use the name you have in mind then a definitive (or nearso) list is invaluable.

Certainly when naming our boat (the one before this) a few years ago I was on J Shead's sit all the time.

I was also a little taken aback at the administrators comment

Maybe I have missed the point of this site but I thought that the sharing of good practice and helpful websites was exactly what it was in existance for ?
Confess myself baffled at this remark whilst scoring minor political points and being offensive to one another seems acceptable.

Re forum admin / moderation, have you ever done it? I have, for a gaming (COD4) community. It is a thankless task and one where the moderator is constantly up for criticism but has little or no reward. Just saying.

The second I take my boat out on the water and parade it in front of the world in full public view my right to privacy erodes a little,if I wish to give the benefit of my wisdom to an organisation and pronounce my views for all and sundry to take heed of a little more privacy quietly vanishes
It is todays world.
Get over it ?
