JFM - How are the Lerins?

Beautiful beautiful vids! You are indeed putting the drone to proper use :encouragement: .

Just fyi, i was able to view the first vid once but on subsequent attempts i get a message saying 'video not available'.

Here's a drone view of the Cannes new year fireworks at midnight last night. Happy new year to everyone

Amazing photos (again!), thanks for posting. Happy new year to all, from a chilly but v busy NYC.

+1, fab stuff indeed, and very nicely cut.
I'm surprised by the low light performance of the small camera - in a sense, it's even more impressive than in glorious sunshine, where occasionally it reveals some dynamic range limits, when the contrast is very high.

For the records, both videos work nicely from here - and audio too.

PS: good thing that the fireworks were very bright, because otherwise the poor chaps in the sailboat behind your stbd side would have been blinded by Match u/w lights and couldn't have seen a thing!

K, I left the camera settings at default. I haven't got around to learning how to change them. Here are couple of videos. The fireworks one has Rihanna soundtrack that might be limited in some countries- I'll re-do it if needed

Fantastic as always, couldn't see the first video here in Thailand but will be back in blighty tonight so something to look forward to after leaving this glorious weather.

LOL, funny you should say that, I just discussed the same subject via whatsapp with MYAG, who is also there.
18 degrees today and zero wind here in CF - in fact, this afternoon we were walking along the harbour wall in T-shirt!
Mind, I'm sure NYC will be much busier and interesting in all other respects, at this time of the year... :encouragement:
Happy 2016 to U 2, and to anyone else of course.

And a very happy new year to you too! Best wishes

Oh wow !

THAT is why you buy a quad-copter. International standard.

The only thing is you've fecked it for the rest of us now :)

Currently off the coast of China heading back to Hong Kong. Afraid to post the video now !!

Thanks for posting it up.

Henry :)

I think he did that a few months ago.
The most impressive thing about these Phantoms is the stability of the camera.
It is amazing just how stable the gimbal is.

Have a look at this amateur video from Youtube - at about 7mins into the clip he shows just how steady the gimbal makes the video - the image in the bottom right is from the Phantom's camera.

Truly amazing - and, believe me, it does this for real.

Thanks for the kind comments. I've re-edited the fireworks video , see below

@mm, yes, the camera struggles in bright sun and the sun-facing side of my boat in earlier videos is burnt out white, but it works very well at night. Overall I'm happy with it
@hurricane, it is all about the immersiveness. From take off till I hear it above my head on the return I don't look at the thing. you have a pilot's eye view so you would never crash into the sea, and you have an altimeter. The only thing you need is an observer to stop you going backwards or sideways into trees or yacht masts, if those things are nearby, because the pilot eye view has a narrow field of view
@LJS, for some reason there were no fish that night. Normally there are plenty and they are attracted tot he lights because they swim right up to the lights and "kiss" them. I'm amazed their eyes can take it. In summer I'll re shoot that video with fish and swimmers :-) It was in 4m of water but the secret to a nice movie is anything from 2-6m of water and most important a smooth surface (<5kts wind) and a sandy bottom to reflect the light

Absolutely superb JFM, thanks for taking the time to cheer up all stuck in a wet & windy UK !
Now all I need is a bigger, newer boat in the Med and one of them fancy phantom things............

You don't need to see the helicopter. The FPV is completely immersive and inside your head you are inside the helicopter. looking at your boat or whatever, from 30m up in the case of those shots. So long as you can see the boat you can fly the helicopter by line of sight, and anyway the dashboard gives you a line of return to boat and an altitude.

The thing does have LEDs but they're best taped over because they create a glow onto the top corners of the images

Don't try that in the UK

Drone rules are not above height 400ft and you must maintain line of sight

I think the rules are as strict in France, if not more so; night flights are illegal for instance. However, the drone police are unlikely to hunt him down for flying a few hundred feet above an empty bay. Probably best not to try it off Saint Laurent Du Var :)
Superb shots though. Love it!

I saw these - just wondered!!!

We use Oculus Rift gogs for some VR applications, and are now experimenting with a cardboard holder for your smart phone that creates a similar effect. This might work well with the drone. Will check with the Geeks at work and report back if anyone interested. Cracking vid JFM.
