-in that it won't start.

Full battery.
Fuel getting through, sparking at plug, plenty of fuel ( might be "stale", how long before petrol goes off ? would this stop it firing up ?)

Any ideas guys ?

Petrol does go off, but usually in the float chambers, you might try pulling these off and cleaning any guinge out, my outboard often has to have this done afterb the winter layup. I would then try new fuel, draining off what is in there and then putting soime new in, if the beast starts, you will probably be able to add the old fuel and it'll be ok. I used to do this with old cars, worked quite often.

If you have stale fuel the presumably you haven't run for some time. Try new plugs if new fuel doesn't work. Small petrol engines can sometime destroy plugs if their not run. You can see a spark when the plug is out of the engine but in the cylinder under pressure it fails.

Well. it could be an issure of watery fuel, if it hasn't run for ages. Drain, suck or syphon the fuel (they only hold 10 ish gals max) wil establish what's what - but I think you'd get very rough running, not "nothing".

You say fuel is getting through- is the spark plug a bit wet with fuel? It should be. So it should detonate the fuel. If spark plug dry after a few pulls/starts the fuel ain't getting through. Undo spark plug and have a look at it. This never does any good. But, recnect the lead to it, hold plastic bit and place bottom of plug on the engine as earth and give a turn, and there should be fat sparks across the gap. If plugs are blackish, perhasp renew. Spark plugs shd be the colour of a Rich Tea biscuit. If ow ow you get a spark on hand despite holding the plastic bit, then spark is leaking and need new plastic top, all getable from halfordsy type places or dealer.

But say there are sparks, and the plug is indeed getting wet, right, so it should definitely go bang a bit. Unless too much fuel: check for flooding is disconnect the fuel and pull/start away, eventually it will fire, reconnect fuel, and give the loathsome beast a damn good thrashing.

good luck

Thanks guys.

I'll clean the carb, put new fuel and plugs in, then check for flooding.

I'll let you know !

Stale fuel

If the rest of it is OK it ought to start with the fuel left over from last season as long as the tank was well sealed. Might run a bit poor and be down on power.

If the fuel is any older than a few months, drain and fill with fresh to get it going, then use 50:50 old with new to get rid of it.

If you have proved fuel is getting through that probably eliminates serious gunk (left behind when fuel evaporates) in carb.
