I was in Thailand a couple of months ago and the sea was a bit rough one day.
When I wandered along the beech there were huge jelly fish twice the size of a dinner plate! They had large domed centres, looked like a small flying saucer! The locals said dont touch them even if they appear dead because the sting can still be nasty! I rode over one with a push bike by accident and to my surprise is was not soft but hard like concrete!

No idea what use they are though!

Hi !

Depends where you are to some extent as the variety of jellyfish varies in different locations. Along the Costas, we came across loads at different times and reacted much you you have, however several Spanish friends laughed and said take no notice unless the jellyfish was coloured brown!! They used to jump in to swim and totally ignored the other, more transparent sort.

It took a while, but we did too in the end and only once got a slight sting on the hand (from a 'brown' one we hadn't spotted) but this was far less painful/irritating than touching a stinging nettle. We used to grab them in the end as we lost all fear of them - probably a daft thing to do - but we just couldn't sit in the cockpit in the sweltering heat and not swim!

Where there was a high number of JF and it was more difficult to spot any brown ones (far less common than the others incidentally) one of us used to sit on deck and keep an eye out while others swam.

I think if you take special care with young children you'd be fine IMHO.

One of our Spanish friends told us that over-fishing had contributed hugely to the explosion in JF's along the Costas, as the larvae (eggs?) of the JF were a food source for other fish species, and fewer fish meant more young JF survived. No idea whether this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Good sailing and swimming!

Actually, Clive, I was wondering about heading south over winter 'coz I'm thinking it might be a bit warmer and less windy than the Costa Blanca. What do you reckon?
