Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 34.2 vs Beneteau Oceanis 361

I only ever had a day on the SO, compared with several weeks on the 361 (all in the eastern med) so my experience isn't quite level, but....

The SO seemed a sharper sail, whereas the 361 was a bit more slow and steady. You could leave the helm for longer on the 361 and it would stay pretty much on course for ages - not my experience on the SO although we had less time to get familiar.

The 361 was a better boat to holiday on, with space better used for the two of us plus 3 small sprogs. Generally I've found the fit-out in Jens to be more fragile than Bens when subjected to the inquisitive hands of our hooligans....

If we didn't have the little 'uns with us, we'd both prefer to sail the jeanneau, but the oceanis wins it for steady family plodding in warmer climes.

Of course, if you're planning to bash around the west coast of Scotland, ignore all the above and find someone with more relevant experience. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The SO36.2 is more equivalent to the 361 in terms of size and layout. The 34.2 is certainly quick and easy to sail short-handed, but has a linear galley which may not suit. I have to declare an interest - have owned a 36.2 for 5 years and have friends with a 34.2.

We've owned a Oceanis 361 for 4 seasons now changing up from a smaller yacht. We looked at the Jen 36.2 plus Sun fast 35 amongst others. We thought that the interiors and finish of the Jenneau's was not as good as the Beneteau's.

However is all a case of personal taste and affordability.

We're very happy with the Bennie and no plans to change it at present /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
