Jeanneau - shattered galley glass panel - anyone else had this happening?!

My jeanneau built in 2012 has (well, had) a 200mm or so high glass sink splash back panel behind the sink. Arrived at the boat today to find it had completely shattered, with bits all over the place and a lot of tiny glass shards. It was obviously a toughened glass construction, but no sign of what had caused this. Nothing could have impacted it, and it has not been particularly cold since I was last on the boat only a week ago. Just very glad I was not there when it shattered.........

i know there are loads of boats with these types of splash back panels. Has anyone else had this happen? Or am I just unlucky?

Thinking that a replacement in a plastic material might be wise?
 
I have posted there too, but have seen this type of panel on many other makes of boat (mostly french admittedly!) - hence asking here .......
 
We had something similar happen with our windscreen. Just spontaneously shattered without any sign of impact - we didn't actually see it occur, but were nearby on the same pontoon and there was nothing going on that could have caused something to hit it. We found other owners of the same boat who had experienced the same thing - apparently some of the windscreens were toughened in a way that locked up stresses in the glass, and decades later they can shatter unprompted.

At least a flat (presumably) splashback will be a lot cheaper to replace than a large curved windscreen!

In your position I would get a new one made - seems unlikely that it would happen again, and a plastic panel will quickly end up looking nasty. Look for places that make custom toughened-glass shelves for bathrooms.

You should get a response on the Jeanneau forum, I can have a look there tomorrow as well. I certainly remember a thread about it quite a long time ago. Exactly the same thing you mention i.e. Arrive at boat to discover it has broken for no obvious reason.

I was worried about mine after reading the thread and looked at the screws carefully the next day. I seem to remember taking off the covers but nothing else as it must have been a few years ago. I haven't examined them again and the boat has now had 11 years use. Pretty certain it isn't very common but has been reported quite a few times. I think I first read about it not long after leaving Ardrossan in 2012.

I seem to remember Jeanneau replacement is a silly price (pretty much everything is, from coat hooks upwards). I think some people got templates from another owner and had panels made from Acrylic or toughened glass. I vaguely remember making up a template but have no idea where I put it. I must make a note to find it or make up another from thick vinyl as that's easy when the glass is in one piece.

Not quite the same thing, but the glass in the oven door shattered spontaneously on a friend’s boat. It was put down to some rust forming near the bottom of the glass panel -- expanding, causing the shatter.
Might it be similar for your panel if there is any corrosion at the mounting?

Thanks all, I also posted in the jeanneau forum, seems these panels have an occasional tendency to let go without warning. I found pieces as far away as the chart table and the aft cabin! Also, there is a huge amount of tiny glass slithers to hoover up. Fortunately the boat is empty for the winter, all cushions and soft furnishings removed, otherwise the cleanup would be horrendous.

My preference at the moment is to replace it with a plastic, say an acrylic. If I look after it, should last a while.

Any suggestions for a supplier for a cut acrylic panel? the panel is simple flat, rectangular with profiled edges.
 
My local plastics shop (windows, pipes, all sorts), cut and shaped, to my dimensions, a smoked 'Perspex' splashback that, several years after installing, still looks new. Washed and cared for a bit but not overly so.

Years since I used them but I do still remember one specific visit on a Saturday morning in 2004. I parked against a wall and went in to buy some off-cuts. On my birthday 2 days later I heard the news that they'd had a bit of an explosion. About 9 people dead and not much left of the building, let alone the wall where I'd parked.

I have been back a couple of times after they re-built and always managed to get the off-cuts I needed. I don't know if they still sell off-cuts but likely to be a good place to try.
 
interesting. I looked at the Jeanneau ones for my sun odyssey but apart from the price I thought they might shatter so I had a local glass works produce one with laminate in the middle so even if it shatters it will remain in one piece. It was in all about 20% of the prce Of the Jeanneau one.
