I've been keeping en eye on P36's in the market and they seem to come with either a pair of Volvo KAD44 260hp, Volvo KAMD300 285hp, or a pair of Volvo D6 310 hp's. However, I'm sure I heard or read about some of them being fitted with a pair of 360hp engines - was this so?

The top and cruising speed seems much the same whichever engines are fitted (or am I wrong on this), so presumably mpg will be the only variant with hp differences? Would it be fair to say the smaller engines are more accessible and so more likely to have been maintained better?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

Hi GG

Early models were fitted with KAMD44's. About a 26.5 knot top speed with a light boat and all things being lovely... But, unless cheap, avoid.
They really struggle and with a heavy load, a bigger sea, or with a seasons muck on the bottom you will not have much fun and burn plenty of juice.

IMHO, the best engine ever fitted to the '36 was the KAMD300s. 28.5 knot top speed in fair conditions and very capable of cruising at low 20s. Well balanced, sensible fuel consumption, but just enough more grunt to keep the boat running well in a heavy sea or when loaded or weeded up. As the boat isn't trying too hard, fuel consumption is better than on the 44s.

A very few 36s were fitted with TAMD63p flavour (I think it was that model from memory, but it was hardly any). Sure it gave the boat loads of extra torque and it did push the boat beyond 30 knots, but they weren't really needed. Don't see them as a big selling point, but maybe nice to have if they are £ for £ the same.

When Volvo moved on from the KAMDs they initially fitted the 36 with D4.300s(? again from memory?) and also had the choice of D6.370s (memory???).
I only drove one 36 with D4.300s and it was back from the 2007 Southampton Boat Show. It was REALLY sluggish and felt quite horrid. I can only put this down to something not being right in the moving bits as it simply felt like those old KAMD44s all over again.

Yes, the D6.370 was great, but wholly unneccessary and pretty shortly Jeanneau offered it with D6.310s. Lovely, once again balance is restored.

IMVHO if I was buying I would be hunting for a bargain 36 with KAMD300s or a newer example with D6.310s.

If bigger engines came my way for a damn good price then wahey get in there, but I wouldn't be too worried about that.

However, I wouldn't give the advert a second glance with D4.300s or KAMD44s unless the boat was going for peanuts.

From an engineers point there not the easiest enginerooms to work in even if your my size, they built the boat around the engines!!.

I have serviced quite a few32s and 36s, with various engines in kad 44,300 d4 d6 and my worst of all to get at tamd63ps.

The 63 p was impossible to change the starboard oil filters and impeller, it took a day to dismantle the saloon settee and floor panels, the boat was around 5 years old, to my horror the oil filters still had the green paint on which told me thay had never been changed, neither had the impeller, so id be very weary about service history, mind you ive seen some targas that have had the same treatment, or lack of it!!.

Great volume boat £ per £ you get newer boat for same money as an older built uk boat, though depreciation is still on the cards for years to come, in my opinon you cant beat horsepower, so id go for a D4 300hp boat.

So would it be reasonable to expect slightly less fuel consumption with the larger lumps? I suppose what I'm asking is why would the buyer of these boats (when they were new) spec them with more hp if the speeds and mpg were much of a muchness?
