Late last Friday we took delivery of a new-to-us 2016 Jeanneau NC9 fitted with a VP D4/260 with DPH drive and 120 running hours. Our previous boat had the same engine/drive set-up, but did not have an actuator on the gear select and so was heavy and imprecise in operation, but was quiet on engagement. The NC9 has an actuator and I can hear and feel a not insignificant "thump" when it engages gear. Everything functions as it should and after 5 years of heaving on the control, the light action with the actuator is a sheer delight! But, is the "thump" to be expected?

Not sure if we have the same thing going on, but the symptoms seem to be the same. Sterndrive clunk on engagement

I think the VP/DPH set up uses a cone clutch too …

You’ll see from the end of the thread that I’ve taken the ‘carry on and monitor‘ route. I’m still pretty sure the cone clutch isn’t correctly/perfectly adjusted and am waiting to compare with an identical boat on the next marina to ours. I will report back.

How many hours was the previous boat? I was under the impression you only had to worry when it stopped making the clunk on engagement :)

Nothing wrong there
