Jeanneau Merry Fisher 805 Range? (Volvo Penta TAMD-41p)

Yer, yer right Col
Some 'semi d' jobs take a little concentration when plodding
My Nimbus (like yours I guess) came with an autohelm
Boat before didn't so I fitted one and it did realy help
Did a 13 hour delivery trip early last Year without one, plus only a couple of hours relief
Was quite tiring
Plus I might add, most semi displacement vessels of about the size of the MF 805 seem to be almost as economical at 12 kts ish as 8
Plus I might add at 12 the scenery seems to move along quite nicely
Plus I will add, liquid refreshment is still able to slide down the gullet easily unless of course the passage plan is duff etc!
Yes, said vessel will make 20 ish but then concentration levels need to be more acute at that velocity, which can bring on more tiredness and a greater thirst
Complicated stuff this motorboat Lark, innit!

About 1000 nm at 8 knots 12 hours a day. 10 days.
10 marina overnight stops.
2000 Litres of fuel .
10 x top of tanks .
Another 120 hours on the clock.
£1500.00 and a day to get it back by road ?

Hi there, thanks for this.
I am not worried in terms of how long it will take as that is not a problem.
That is still cheaper than the €10,164 (£8882.37) I have been quoted...

Sounds like an awful lot of money . Were they flying it back ?
Got quotes considerably cheaper than that on considerably bigger boats.

I won't name the company but it does seem very steep...I would definitely be motoring her back if that was a good quote!

Might be an option to get the boat road shipped to Brittany and motor across the channel. You would need to be confident in the boats reliability of course.

If the overland shipping is really that much money and you like the idea of the adventure/challenge to do the voyage by water then my plan would be:-
(1) given that you should always plan to use a maximum of 2/3rds of a tank of fuel, leaving a 1/3rd in reserve, I would put 6 plastic 20litre cans on board which will increase your 150lites of safe volume to 270lites which, based on my usage (similar boat same engine) when cruising at 13knots, would give you a safe range of 180nM.
(2) 180nM at 13knots is 14 hours which is probable as much as you would want to do in one leg without an autopilot or with less than 3 people.
(3) you did not say where in North Spain but the above range should give you scope to find suitable harbours to do the trip in 5 legs. Avoiding bad weather and having the occasional day of rest, the total trip could easily take 10 days.
(4) take a 12 volt fuel transfer pump as trying to pour from a 20litre can into a funnel in a seaway means you will spill a fair bit, if you can do it at all.

Hi Rick,

I am going to have to issue some disappointing news. I was really worrying over COVID travel restrictions and the current situation that I had her brought back on a low loader. Also, the winter season was approaching fast and wanted to have her in the UK before it would just be completely impossible.

I am however currently enjoying the inland waterways, not as much as the sea but it's better to be on the water than not!

I thought Covid might have got in the way! But you got it home. Just out of interest, what was the cost of trailer ING it back. Presumably to St malo or cherbourg?
Just for future info, my similar MF 925, with a 265hp volvo penta, burns about 37 litres per hour at 3200rpm giving 17 knots.

Unfortunately so, I didn't want to have to wait until potentially next year and be paying for something I am not using.
So I used Shoreline Interboat who I highly recommend and they did mine as a dedicated trip. All in, it came to £5,220.00.

Thanks for the info Rick, that is useful to know! Do you service your own Penta or do you have someone else do it?

I get the professionals to look after that side of things everytime. But I take great care of it and it runs like a Swiss watch!

I have the same engine (different boat) and have been doing my own servicing for the last 5 years. Not difficult, you get to know your engine better and more likely to spot issues before they become problems.

Hi Plum,
Have you got an tips for servicing the Penta TAMD-41p? Can you recommend a pump for the oil etc and what things I should be looking out for.
Thanks!

Just a tip with the MF805 take out the bottom step to remove the panel so access to the front of the engine is visible. This makes getting to the belts and water pump much easier. I use a car suction pump and place over the dip stick hole and pump away. Don’t forget to do the tappets every 200 HRS

Good tip already from JL. I use ond of these with my battery drill Sealey TP51 Water Pump Drill Powered for sale online | eBay to pump out the oil. The dipstick tube on these engines goes to the bottom of the sump so no need to poke a tiny hose down it, just a half inch hose over the top of the dipstick tube with the oil nice and warm and it will pump out in no time. If you have not already noticed, checking the oil level can be confusing! Sometimes when you extract the dipstick there will be no oil on it at all! Don't start adding lots of oil. Wait a minute, put dipstick fully in and remove it to reveal there was oil there all the time. Because there is an o-ring sealing the top of the dipstick and the tube goes to the bottom of the sump the oil level in the tube stabilizes only when the dipstick is first removed and reinserted. Do you have the owners handbook giving the service schedules?

Hi Jamie, I am going to make a massive fool of myself...but, when you say to do the tappets, what does that entail?
