I am short listing some boats to view and one in particular I really fancy. Before I drive around the UK viewing I thought I should do some homework first.
It's a Jeanneau 29.2 and I wondered if any forumites have experience of this model.
I understand that there are several variants in the range which includes a swing keel version.
What should I be looking out for?
I would welcome any thoughts you may have.

Where are you planning on keeping it? - The swing keel would give you more options on moorings if you are planning on Chichester.
 
I was looking at Chichester harbour, possibly Thornham, or maybe Emsworth but still looking around at other opportunities.
 
We (my wife and I, both retired) have a Jeanneau Sun light 30 1987. I think this would be a fore-runner of the 29.2. We have the shallow draft keel (1.45m) and we have been very happy with the boat. We cruise along the south coast from Falmouth and across to Brittany and south Brittany as well as the Channel Isles and Isles of Scilly.

We haven't had any problems with the boat at all. We had an Eygthene 24 (a quarter tonner) before this and cruised the same areas. That boat also went very well, but the Jeanneau has a lot more comfort.

I had looked at the 30 and I was impressed with the styling and internal volume. Sadly I wasn't fast enough and someone else is now the owner.
I think you are correct in saying that the 29.2 took over where the 30 left off.
I haven't decided whether keel type to go for so I am very open minded at the moment. My only concern with the lifting keel variant would be if the winding gear failed. I haven't heard of this happening, so I guess it is a rare occurrence.

What insurance costs might I expect for such a boat?

Insurance is very cheap. Although where you keep it and where you intend to sail will influence the premium, value is the biggest factor. Would think in the range £3-400, but it is easy to get quotes on line once you have the key information available.
 
My parents had a new one a few years ago. It was a very nice boat if a little tender when the wind started to get up. It was the fin keel boat which was a category B. If my memory serves me correctly I think the lift keel version is only category C!!!

The later versions were smartened up from the early versions, with little things like more wood trim etc, etc....

The only real problem had was the laminate on the steps in started to peel. I advise to keep the steps as dry as possible on a wet day.

Unfortunately this 29.2 sank on lake windermere when it was only 2-1/2 years old. It was not the boats fault, or our fault. The marina decided to launch it and used old rope to moor it. In a storm only a couple of days later the rope broke and it was smashed on a jetty.....

But to reassure you in your choice, if it had not been for that incident we would likely still have the boat today. Like all jeanneau's it is a very nice looking and stylish boat and much slimmer and less bloated compared to newer boats of similar size.

It was available with tiller or wheel steering. We had the tiller.
 
You've probably already gone down these lines.....but others also to consider maybe the Jeanneau Sundream, Kelt 850 (later the Feeling 29 DI) the Feeling 850 or 286, Beneteau 285, Feeling 306, GibSea 284 or 6, (I forget!) or, for something a little newer, the Feeling 30.........
 
The Sun Dream 28 & the (later) Sun Odyssey 30 are the same hull, designed by Tony Castro. My last boat was the Sun Dream, pretty capable, too much space given over to berths IMO although there is a big cockpit locker on the other side to the aft cabin. I also didn't like the tapering settees in the saloon. A better looking boat than todays 30 footers IMO, i.e. back end not too fat and not near vertical in the water at the bow. Tiller steering = good...

Nice boat.. got me to all the places I needed to get to at the time..

Came in two engine variants at the time 10hp or 20hp. The 10hp is sufficient for engine power but as it may be fresh (sea) water cooled then probably no calorifier (therefore no hot taps/shower).

Only sold to get bigger boat.
 
Send a PM to mrplastic of this parish: he has one, which was pretty much in "boat show condition" when I saw it last year. Last I heard, he was thinking of "trading up", so you may be able to get a good deal...
