You are right Jakew, if you lift your outdrives and leave it up after using your boat the piston ram is exposed to the elements and hence gets some crustacean growth, next time you drop it this growth can tear the seals in the trim rams, the simple answer is don't leave the outdrive up. I found out the hard way but now leave it fully down and have had no problems in 3 years
Same when on the hard. Keep the drive(s) down to prevent strech of the bellows 'n hoses and keep hyd. ram pistons protected.

You are right, however it was steering rams that were referenced, not power trim rams (a problem that affected the DPH drives used with D4 engines). This was resolved ages ago by Volvo Penta by fitting rubber gaiters over them to eliminate growth.

Your advice is completely sound regarding trim rams though, always leave the boat with the outdrive(s) tilted right down (unless drying out obviously).

Unfortunately, whenever this subject crops up, there are always 'experts' saying 'don't have outdrives' which is very poor advice, but won't go away because it makes them feel like they actually are experts.
