Just finished reading DAvid Mercy's book, Berserk In the Antartic, (cracking story and really well written, 19 year old norwegian boy sails from Norway in an albin vega, round the world, round cape horn, then goes exploring Antartica with two hitchhikers, absolutely fascinating and riveting reading) and an idle google to see what happened to Jarle afterward brought some surprises.

Looks like he carried on the tradition :)

Nothing I’ve read about the bloke will ever make me conclude anything other than he is a complete tool. He’s the explorers equivalent of Piers Morgan.

That's a pile of poo. Morgan has never done anything worthwhile in his life.

I rather expect your opinion will be well supported in here though.

We need more mavericks like Andhoy in the world.

I woukdn't bother criticising someone who sailed round the world alone at 19, tried to force the North West Passage, and merrily crunches through growlers, drinking mead and swimming in the N.Pole. What a guy!
if he annoys people good for him, the world needs mentalists

There was a DVD made of the trip to Antarctica if I remember correctly. Saw it but was never able to get a copy.

Probably not, but they took the risk.

I doubt that he took their deaths lightly either.

You can't live an adventurous life without accepting that the price may be an early death. It's sad for their loved ones but they do not get to choose how others live their own life.

I'm inclined to agree, but I suspect the families of those who died in the Antarctic may not.

I take your point but I'm inclined to think that people today may be overly concerned about their families.

Where would we be if Scott, Shackleton, Churchill, Chichester, Ellen McArthur, Knox-Johnston et al had allowed concern for their families to stifle their ambitions?

It does seem to be common for explorers and adventurers to be ..difficult in some ways. Their vitality, restlessness and drive comes with a cost.

Was in Pto Williams in late 2011 or maybe 2012 when he turned up along with a maori 'activist' with no paperwork.

The Armada and other authorities were less than impressed... nor was I.... a noisy little dropkick..... he is the sort of r****g f*****g lunatic that gives r****g f*****g lunatics a bad name.

To compare him with 'Scott, Shackleton, Churchill, Chichester, Ellen McArthur, Knox-Johnston' is to do those people a great dis-service.

I fear you have rather missed the point.
