I have Princess 420 with Twin Volvo Tamd 63p engines after the winter I went to start her today and on one engine the Alternator appears to be jammed any one know any quick fixes or have I got to take it off the boat
Regards Deaconia

Two possibilities I can see for an alternator jamming is for the bearings to be seized, or that the rotor is so rusty that it has rusted itself to the stator.
A dose of WD40 might just get it rotating again but for the same thing to happen again and again. A take off and professional sort out is on the cards I'm afraid.
Worth asking the question where the water has come from. Do you have a leaking water pump (as I did on a previous boat) which threw tiny drops of salt water into my alternator.

Remove and either strip down and sort out what is causing the problem yourself or take to an autoelectrician for a complete overhaul and testing.

if you do it yourself you'll learn a bit about the insides of an alternator.

If you take it to a good auto-electricain you should end up with a unit that is as good as new.

For some reason ive changed many alternators off the 63p, 74 and 75p engines they just rot away when not in use, good old valeo, what happened to bosch? too dear I guess.

Sorry but its buy new time.

Thanks for you help i'm sure it will have to come off but I was looking for a quick fix as I have to move the boat a short distance Regards Deaconia

Doesn't say much for a marinised alternator. Apart from the insulated return my cheapo lucas ACR had extra varnish on it. Wide choice of new items on eBay.
