Are you assuming that both lines are held tight at all times? On smaller boats, particularly when beating, I don't feel this is necessary. I bring the traveller to the centre before tacking and can then control the power by using just the windward adjuster. I don't race the yacht so on light days, when taking the traveller to windward might be useful, I use the engine.
Don't overlook the advantage of keeping the free ends away from the traveller. Things like that have a habit of catching at the most inopportune moments.
