Hi All, I have a Jabsco 1.9 par-max pump on the fresh water system, the boat is new to me (Oct 2009) Run system dry prior to winter layup and empted the water tank, boat now back in the water and refilled the system to-day, manual outlets okay, pump running but no water at outlets
removed hoses from pump sucked water on inlet side to create syphon and water started flowing
out (not to my taste) reconnected hoses,pump runs but no water at outlets ? I have looked on the web at Jabsco pumps and they state that they are selfpriming, if so what could be the problem? although I drained the main tank and ran the pump until the water ceased prior to layup I did not remove the hoses from the pump to drain it internally, could this be the problem
your advice would be welcome.

It is possible that if there was water left in the pump it could have frozen and done damage.
Can you connect another, local supply - say a bucket - near to the pump?
Although if you have pulled the water through to the pump by suction is does seem a little terminal.
 
Co-incidentally I had the same experience today. My pump is a Whale Gusher Galley Mk.3 the foot pump part works but the electric pump is producing no water. It may not have been fully drained before the big freeze but the fresh water tank was empty. The calorifier was drained and I wondered if 20 litres of air in it could be the problem. There is a service kit at about half the price of the pump but I am not sure if this would resolve frost damage. I suppose the thing to do is to get it out and dismantle it, anyone got any other ideas because it is through bulkhead and almost inaccessible in the tradition of the marine industry and therefore a swearing contortionist job. My other idea was to pressurize the system through the cold water tank breather and see if that helped the priming but I am clutching at straws.
 
Check the inline strainer just before the pump. Take it out and clean the mesh. If you ran the pump dry, there may have been some very fine grit settled in the tank which will now be all over the strainer. Even if very fine, it can be enough to stop the flow. Has happened to me on several occasions.
 
sometimes when a water tank is empty, there is still some h 2 0 left in the water line and the pump body. if this has frozen, your pump may not be functional. winterize by putting 3 gallons of 50-50 potable water antifreeze into the bottom of your water tank after the pump has 'pumped dry.' then turn the pump on and get the antifreeeze flowing thru the pump and into the outlet spigots and showers .(catch & reuse the antifreeze..) that's the only sure way i know to avoid pump damage from freezing of residual water in the pump..
 
Hi all, thanks for your replies, before I remove the pump and strip it down i will phone jabsco technical dept on tues and ask if this generally happens when the system has been drained,Iam sure his reply will be ( no sir you should always drain the pump body to preventing it freezing!)
Ill keep you posted of the outcome.
 
My Jabsco pump pressure switch on the top of the pump had a very small crack in it prob frozen over this winter and exhibited the same problems.
Changed pressure switch cured it .Also check any non return valves too,they might be letting air in if split frozen.
 
Japsco pump

As mentioned in connection with frost damage above. Japscos do self prime. Must say any air at all in the suction line will stop the pump from priming and it is suprising how little is needed to do this. Also you will not see a leak because this side of the pump is under negative pressure and still drawing in air when eventually made to work. Check all hoses and clips on suction side.Also gaskets/seals in pump.
