Jabsco toilet joker valve

Many problems seem to arise from the curse of the holding tank -our last boat never had one and life was simple pipe and valve wise. With a holding tank and everything passing through it it’s designed for problems or maybe not for manual jabsco toilets. I’m just waiting to bite the bullet and replace the old jabsco with an electric non jabsco version from well known other suppliers . Many on here recommend other electric makes which must be way to go one day surely.

The lips must be vertical.

If the hose routing has a long up slope, rather than quickly up to a high point and then draining to the tank, back flow is more likely.

Chemical exposure or winterizing procedures can be a problem.

Most likely a combination of several the factors that have been mentioned.
I suspect cleaning fluids are shortening the life of your joker making it less pliable and impairing sealing. Several seasons life is the norm. I recommend vinegar for antibacterial action and to deter buildup in the pipe, but copious fesh water when leaving the boat.

Sulphur smells on returning to the boat encourage folks to purge with chemicals. This is a mistake; pump through on boarding.

Build up in the exhaust pipe can be abated by vinegar soaking and flexing the pipe with a cramp - gently, to crack deposits

I have an electric Jabsco. I had the problem that the joker allowed back flow after only a few months use. It is partly due to the accumulation of calcified stuff on the valve and partly because its a flimsy design. I now regularly put hydrochloric acid into the toilet to keep the pipes clean. I also changed the joker to a tri-flanged design such as the Jabsco 58109-1000 Non return Valve kit

I hate my two Jabsco toilets. As liveabords they get a lot of use. I am fed up of being a sanitation engineer so today I ordered two Blakes Lavac toilets. We had them on our previous boat and they were trouble free.

Scale from urine and seawater was our usual problem. Pumping fresh water through at the end of each flush helps or just swap over every so often and clean up the scaled one at your leisure using someone else's toothbrush.
