hi there from Australia .... I have one of these wonderful little pumps in my motorhome and am having trouble with pressure in the toilet . I've had the pump out and all appears fine but am not sure how to increase the pressure so toilet flushes properly . Any related advice would be appreciated ..... happy new year to all

Hi Roger welcome to the forum.

The particular pump is normally used for fresh water pressure systems. I think what you need is a high flow rate rather than a higher pressure

Like this 16 lt/min where as yours is only 11 lt/min

Jabsco 31620-0292 - Par Max 4' pressure-controlled pump / Pressurised Fresh Water Pumps / Pumps / Marine / Xylem JabscoShop - Jabsco & Rule Pumps and more - from the experts

Or something like this which is a much higher flow rate

Jabsco 23680-4003 - ‘Water Puppy’ self-priming pump 12 volt d.c. / Deck & Anchor Wash Pumps / Pumps / Marine / Xylem JabscoShop - Jabsco & Rule Pumps and more - from the experts

If you stick with Jabsco you will get good quality but pay a
high price.

Why not look at a Chinese pump at a fraction of the price

Just ensure if increasing pressure the connecting fittings can take it. This is a fresh water issue normally but if used for a camper I don't think clean bilges would be the result of a connector failure.

My current motorhome uses a submerged pump with microswitches on the taps. The pump is two centrifugal pumps in series, i.e. high flow rate, and flushes the toilet well.
In the past I have owned vans with pressurised water systems that also flushed well. At least one of them had the pump you have, with a plastic accumulator. Have you checked for restrictions in the hoses?

Welcome to the forums!

The pressure switch on your pump is meant to be non-adjustable. It might be possible to fit a pressure switch from a different Jabsco pump, with higher pressure settings, but you'd need to ask Jabsco which switch might fit your pump.

Doesn't the OP want a pressure pump for fresh water flushing, not a macerator pump for sewage?

You may well be right but how can you flush a toilet with just 11 liters per minute? They don't seem to mention flushing toilets in their spiele?

Jabsco ParMax 2.9 - J20 102 Caravan Pump
Fantastic pump for your caravan, or motor home when you need water to up to 3 outlets.
  • The ideal quiet pump for providing fresh water up to the 10 metre range.
  • Perfect for on a pleasure craft, caravans and motor homes. This 3 chamber automatic pressure pump gives flow up to 11 litres per minute (2.9 gallons) and pressure to 50 PSI.
  • Always use this pump with a pump strainer so you do not void the manufacturers warranty. Strainers sold separately in our store.
  • Serves up to 3 outlets including sink, shower and additional faucet. If you need a pump with a higher flow we also have them in our store. Try our FL40!
  • The Par Max 2.9 gives very smooth water flow even at low demand due to its built-in pulsation dampening by-pass valve which controls unwanted cycling and reduces noise. No need for an accumulator tank.
  • We sell a huge range of Jabsco, Shurflo and Rule pumps at discounted prices. If you can't find what you need here. Send us a message and we'll be happy to help. Our prices are always low!

I think you want higher flow not pressure. Assuming the pump is original equipment I suspect a restriction somewhere.
I suspect you are right as the flow rate in the kitchen sink of my motorhome is acceptable suggesting the pump is operating well enough . I might disconnect the delivery line from the pump to the toilet and just prior to the toilet itself and flush it with town water and or compressed air .... carry on

many thanks Roger

It all depends what you are trying to achieve. I wanted somewhere close to home flow rates. To achieve this you would need flow rates around this level

Jabsco 42755-0092 - VFlo Constant Pressure Water System Pump / Pressurised Fresh Water Pumps / Pumps / Marine / Xylem JabscoShop - Jabsco & Rule Pumps and more - from the experts

Even then the shower, while pretty good, will fall short of a good flow shower you might have at home, but be a little better than a gravity fed shower with say a 15 foot drop.

The other key is to always check your pipes and taps. A good system should have a filter screen in it somewhere - any contamination of the screen will significantly reduce flow, as will any debris in the taps around the washers. For some strange reason, taps for boats and caravans often include some sort of screen or flow restrictors within the tap which easily become blocked. Finally scale can be a similiar problem.

You can adjust these pumps with the screw in the pressure switch, but will be limited by the relief valve on the system (if it’s part of your domestic system)

good morning .... what I am trying to achieve is a flow rate that flushes the toilet properly by swirling sufficient water around the toilet bowl to clear it . I have checked the flow rate at all 3 outlets and it is around 4.5 l/m which is about 1/2 of the rated 9 l/m !!!. All lines seems to unrestricted which would suggest that if this flow rate is acceptable then the problem may lie with the Thetford toilet pump . I would like to know if the current flowrate is acceptable , thus eliminating this possibility .... your assistance would be appreciated
regards and compliments of the season RRRRRRRRoger

I would start by stripping the pump. It is only too easy for a tiny piece of debris to prevent the valves seating correctly in this type of pump.

Not sure how much work your pump might have done but when the Par max 1 pump I use for my fridge cooling seemed to be performing poorly I found that the cam driving the diaphragm was almost totally worn away.

Either of these would reduce the flow rate.

Good morning Roger - I understand your questionn. The above advice is very sound and well worth checking the epump as well. There will of course be a valve on the toilet which will be another restriction point. At least in my experience published flow rates rarely correspond to reality by the time the water has been forced through pipework, valves and filters. Scienttifically I guess if you take the pipe off the toilet (after the flush valve if that is possible) and check the flow rate it will give a good indication, but I expect that's a real PITA. When you think of domestic toilets getting enough flow around the bowl is a challenge without a big pump, and then you need to deal with the discharge. My boat toilets are Vacuflush so much the same as on aircraft. They use relatively little water, but a high pressure vacuum to discharge the contents. Unfortunately most boat toilets and motor homes for that matter inn my experience arent really up to the job and designed for occasional use - sadly all about the manufacturers saving money by using pumps and systme that only just cope.

Finally ..... found the problem . The inline filter to the toilet pump inside the bowl was blocked . I soaked it in warm water and then unblocked the fine gauze strainer , reassembled and it works great .... surprised at the build up so will install another inline filter that is more accessible . I had the whole toilet apart and that was a challenge when you are 6'2" and large hands . Still , I am familiar with the whole system know and that knowledge is worthwhile .
Thank to everyone for their advice and suggestions , much appreciated.

take care all RRRRRoger
