Our 5-year-old Jabsco Par has started to play up a bit recently.
- Pumping in fresh water OK
- Pumping out works well no deterioration of performance visible
- Occasionally the lever at the top appears to fail, blocking the pump out, but can be easily corrected in its position and then pumping works again.

BUT: Within 10-20 min after emptying the bowl, the water level slowly raises about 20cm (to what I guess is outside sea level), to remain like that regardless. Repeated pumping does not help, the water climbs back.

Is there a kind of return valve, does the kind of spare part I need come with one of the typical spare kits? I am asking because looking at the prices of new toilets I want to be sure that it can be fixed easily before a dive into the s**it (no pun intended).

There is usually an anti-syphon device in the loop of the inlet pipe that you should have taking the inlet pipe under the side deck and back down. Various types of these but could be a black upside down 'U' with a screw on bit containing a small rubber diapragham with a small hole in it - the working bit, maybe this is blocked or swollen. Could also be a simple plastic plug like the end of a Bic pen, with a pinhole in it - Lavacs use these. These bits are not part of the Loo, only the pipework to it. For extra security we have a small 3/4" S/S ball valve in the inlet line next to the loo, pump dry and shut this and it will stay dry without turning off the main seacock which is less easily reached.

Joker valve...

If water is slowly coming back in to the bowl, it's most likely that the joker valve needs replacing. This is a 3-sided rubber device which is in the outlet from the pump, at the back of the bottom of the pump. There are 2 screws holding this part in. Remove the screws, pull the plastic housing away, and you should be able to remove the black rubber joker valve. New ones cost about £4.
