Has anyone here used Jabsco impellors before and what was their opinion of them?

Reason I ask is that I've recently tried to fit one on a Volvo AQD40a and it doesn't want to go on. Before anyone ask's yes according to the leaflet inside the box it came it, ( according to Jabsco ), is the right one but the fit just isn't right. The impeller pump shaft is just a tad too thick for it to go on. After a bit of gentle persuasion with my hand it still won't go on the splines yet the old Volvo one will and seems to fit perfectly with just some modest shoving.

After inspecting the inside of the shim on the Jabsco I can see tiny score marks in the pits of the grooves that lead me to believe that it's a micron or two too small.

Thoughts anyone?

They are very difficult to put on if you have not done it before, the old one will be worn and a much easier fit. You might have the wrong size but get an experienced person to check before throwing in the bin.

Some Volvo impellers are actually Jabsco.
Try trying up the splines with a large cable tie, but if it doesn’t go on with shoving and wiggling, don’t try forcing it with tools, otherwise you’ll never get it off again.

I put new impellers in hot water for 5 mins before trying to fit them. Half boiling, half cold so the water is about 50 degs C
this softens the rubber up and makes them a LOT easier to fit. Water proof grease on the shaft and fairy liquid on the impeller and it should then slide in easy. (bear in mind it will be as slippery as an eel and hot, so don't drop it :-) )

If that doesn't do it something is amiss.

Size comparison everything is identical to the old volvo one apart from the splines don't quite seem to match up and unless Jabsco made a mistake when they packaged it it should be the right one for me.

Tried that but once I get it on the splines it stops dead.

The resistance definitely seems more abrupt and metallic rather than from the stiffness of the new rubber. Going to try a genuine Volvo one and see if there's any difference.

Just as a conclusion to this thread I got one from Volvo today and it went on perfectly so all I can assume is that either Jabsco didn't do their research right or have had some quality control issues. Either way it's left me with a bit of a negative view of Jabsco.

Hi do not be too hard on Jabsco as they do a very good job of supplying the marine industry with good quality(albeit expensive) pumps and other related equipment. Volvo fitted more than 1 type of pump to the AQD40a so it possible you obtained the wrong one in the first instance and as you purchased the second one from Volvo the dealer would have/ should have known exactly which part to supply you with. Jabsco tend to use imperial sized shafts and bearing whilst jonston use metric in there original designs as I understand!

On occasion, there is a need to ease the internal spline (brass) on the impeller to allow it to slide onto the exterior spline of the pump shaft.
I have a spare pump shaft that I use to "check" that each newly bought impeller will fit on the spline and yes, the on-board spare is checked also.
I use either Johnson or Jabsco Impellers and I have had to ease both over the past few years, not every one just some.

As I stated earlier according to the packaging it definitely was the right impellor for my engine.
