I have a manual bilge pump and an electric one as well.
The electric pump is a Jabsco diaphragm unit. It’s mounted on a bulkhead under the galley. I’ve just replaced it with new, identical unit and it was the worst bit of contortioning I’ve ever had to do, to get in the locker (and out again).
The pump was fitted by a yard about 10 years ago. I specifically didn’t want a pump that lived in my bilge which is not a nice place. So we agreed on this solution, with both a manual and an automatic switch.
The pump does get a fair bit of use, and at 10 years old I don’t feel it owes me anything. But the reason that I replaced it is that the pump unit was leaking, although it was still working. Having now removed the pump I can see that the reason for the leaks is that some part of the pump, inside the plastic casing, has rusted heavily enough to start to blow the pump apart.
The pump is sold as being suitable for shower or bilge use. To be fair, the pump had not actually failed - but does this use of materials seem reasonable? Or is it just my aches and pains that are making me feel a bit aggrieved?

This is the pump
Jabsco 50880-1000 - Self-priming diaphragm pump 12 volt d.c. / Sink & Shower Drain Pumps / Pumps / Marine / Xylem JabscoShop - Jabsco & Rule Pumps and more - from the experts

it does say it’s suitable for bilge pump duty.
I think I will send some photos to Jabsco, see what they say. After 10 years I’m not so much dissatisfied as surprised
Thanks. Not the same model as mine which must be an older design as it is 20 years old!
