On my system i have a switch over from outside flush or holding tank. Also have you checked all sea cocks are open on your system. I have had the same sitiuation and the only way i found was start from under the toilet lifting up various floor panels to trace it all the way through. I found the problem was a sea cock closed. Also could not empty my tank with the electric switch on the helm. After looking everywhere for the pump found that at one time it most have been changed to manual and the pump had been took out and a manual pump fitted. And my wife cant understand why im out so long !

How long ago did it last work? when you pump is there any/much resistance?

Possibly need a replacement kit thingy for the pump? apparenly easy to fit and quite common...

Even though it goes to the holding tank there should be a switch over under the floor to direct it so you can sea flush also. But i would agree with Steve that it must be the switch over as it should not pump water once switched over. Also when you switch over is the pump handle fully down.

Just a little thought - its not blocked is it? We had this when someone put somnething down they had'nt eaten first...stopped everything moving along the pipe and had blocked it at the entry to the holding tank.

Not a pleasant exercise, but similiar symptons!

Yep, most likely, SWMBO has put something unmentionable down it.

However it's just possible that the valves are sticking. Throw some cooking oil in, then pump like hell with little lever to right.

I had a similar problem on an electric toilet waste not flushing and water filling up the in the bowl turned out to be the holding tank vent was blocked and the the tank became pressurised stopping anything going in,
Very messy to rectify but glad it didn't explode
