Seems to be relatively common in boats the Med.

Anyone with experience with or views on these engines ?

Seems to have a considerable lower purchase price than equivialent second hand with GM, VLVO, CU .... etc.

Know their origin, but lacking objective words of wisdom on reliability etc.

Birchwood started to use them in the early 90`s when they got into financial difficulties with Volvo etc. It certainly made the boats more difficult to sell or at least devalued the price of the boats .If a Birchwood 410 with twin 300 Ivecos was for sale and one with twin volvos were for sale alongside I know which one I would choose.Hence soon after Birchwood went bust and a rather astute Yorkshireman took over and reverted back to Volvo`s for his boats and then explored with Yanmars.Even he`s sold up now.

What's wrong with Ivecos? I know of a few boats which have them, don't seem to cause any problems.

Exactly and now joined up with Ford Truck division, so spares should be relatively cheap and more importantly available everywhere.
Personaly I'd rather have Ivecos than say V&^vos!

I re-engined our last boat with Iveco diesels. And IMHO they were the only away to go (NB I spent months looking at the options). Straight-forward and unstressed, they are what the ideal marine engine is all about. You don't get the the greatest BHP/litre but as a result, you get reliability, economy, and ease of maintenance. The alternative is over-developed lumps from other major manufactures where the 'stretching' soon reveals the weaknesses. I put 1100 hrs on our Ivecos in 4 years and they never missed a beat. No connection with the Company etc etc etc

I look after a fleet of 19 IVECO trucks. We have not had any problems with the engines , they are good , cleanrunnimg ,and economical.I would definitely have one in my boat if I was re-engining

.........I know which one I would choose

So do I and given a choice I would prefer almost anything to Volvos. This forum is full of accounts of the problems people have, complaints about the quite exhorbitant cost of spares and to cap that lot, the crap attitude of Volvo themselves.

I agree in principal with the expense of volvo parts etc etc and certainly over rated but when I sold my last boat I had mine alongside sales pontoon at Penton Hook with identical boat with Mercruisers and the first thing I was always asked "Does it have Volvo`s. and my boat sold 3 months before the model with the Mercs. On a personal note I would try to avoid volvo`s as I now have CATS in my present boat well there is no comparison and the marine service side are excellent even had them out on a Sunday.
