I\'ve been grounded

and given a severe reprimand from SWMBO for breaking Asterie.
"Downright irresponsible behavior, now you've broken her".

No boat in the water, roses required, lunch inland with inlaws, gardening, etc........

Looking at the empty moorings by Hayling Bridge this morning all the boats have gone to bed for the winter - all these poor sods grounded as well?

With any luck and fair wind she'll be all mended and back in next week..

Re: I\'ve been grounded

Ian, I find it hard to beleive a couple of ripples could have caused this damage to such a robust craft as the HR. Are you sure you did'nt hit something a bit harder bur did'nt notice at the time? I'm sure I spotted a sinking supertanker and heard a mayday "Mayday,Mayday,Mayday Supertanker Rommel,Rommel,Rommel, Mayday "Have been hit by Asterie, and am sinking fast... gurgle, gurgle,gurgle...aaargh and then silence" But I thought I was dreaming!

Oh bugger - you noticed, you'll have to ask Duncan - er and I think he has another confession to make, which was a result of: "Ian, which way up IS this chart"? I'll let him tell.. I'll not be accused of pillow talk..

Re: I\'ve been grounded

I understood preferred tactics were not to sink the Nab, but rather to balance it on top of your mast, and try to carry it home.

Re: I\'ve been grounded

Oh! Hell's mandibles... I've realised I've got the wrong mark - it was the Royal Sovereign, not the Nab.

What worries me more is that this relates to an old, old Admirals Cup race, certainly pre Fastnet disaster, probably about 1975. If I recall it was Battlecry that got tangled - I think this ties in with the AC for which I was a training crew (I called it a practical whilst reading Naval Architecture at Southampton).

How come I can recall garbage like this, but yet forget what I was meant to buy between home and shops?

Ah yes, I remember it well...

"The Cervantes Trophy Race provided a side issue that will be long remembered. The 47 foot Sparkman & Stephens Battlecry, beautifully cold-moulded in wood by Souters for John Prentice, rounded the Royal Sovereign Light Tower just a fraction too close for comfort and when the wind swirl around the tower caught the boat, she became slightly more upright and the top of her mast became firmly enmeshed in the structure of the tower. Her crew had to break the mast to get her clear of the tower and that set her campaign back slightly."

You and I must have been about the Solent at the same time. I was offered a crew trial on Noryema, but couldn't wangle enough time off work to make a campaign, so reluctantly refused. Then Noryema went on to score top points in the Admirals Cup. Probably wouldn't have done if i'd been aboard, though. Sigh.

Re: Ah yes, I remember it well...

I might have guessed you'd have it - chapter and verse. Yes, '75 was the period when I did some crewing on a Australian 1/4 tonner (bizarrely cant remember a name!), to do some work up's before the race crew arrived. I suspect the fact that I got offered the ride had something to do with weighing in at around 8 stone - anything much more than that and the boat dived faster than the Kursk with anyone fwd of the mast in a blow. Quite the most vile boat, but went reasonably. Then it would have been down to Weymouth for the Olympic Week (WOW), and finally back to University to sit the end of year exams.
